Interesting, I believe the current estimate of total MJs is 200,000, then there are (or were) about 6,600 MT MJs, if the ratio stays the same.

Jesse, believe it or not, but I had a very similar plan to you when I started on my MJ 3 years ago. It was going to be an offroad trail truck. Its funny how the project evolved. Its also kinda funny, when you look at the parts that you are currently looking for (adjustable control arms), its looking like, when phase 1 of yours is completed, we will have quite similar trucks.

I guess we will see. everything has changed the last couple days.:rotfl2:

that's why this is my favorite truck.  :D  it could be anything!  full resto or a v8 track truck or a rock bouncer.

well, not anything.  being a shortbed I can't make it a Laredo or a numbers matching MT. :D

What is the indicator that designates an MJ as a "metric ton"? My '87 has the trans cooler, d44, 3+2 springs, bigger radiator (since replaced), but no Metric Ton logo on tailgate. PO said he had replaced the original box and that this truck had the "tow package".

yours probably does. I don't know of a code somewhere that dictates it but with a new box. . those are very telling signs of one and I would wager to say you have one. especially with those springs. even If it didnt come with the springs from the factory it is a metric ton now with the axle springs and cooler. if that makes sense

@mark 39  add yours to the '87 REGISTRY and we will tell you if it's a metric ton, along with other build sheet information.:L:

well yes the there where no swbs mts made is obvious. but it seems like there would be a number at jeep or something. was the mt package on all years?

Yes, it was an option in all years ... but the name for the option changed from year to year, IIRC.

In the 1986 model year, the Metric Ton came with an AMC Model 20 rear axle rather than a Dana 44. There was a gas station in the next town that had a 4-cylinder Comanche with the Metric Ton package that they used as a snow plowing rig.

Two ways I can see going with an MT that would be neat (just my opinion though). 1. Restore the MT numbers matching and keep it pristine. 2. Resto mod and go with the MT theme. It was supposed to be a more serious hauler version of the MJ so I’m thinking maybe 2-3” lift with factory rake and a diesel. That would be unique! I just wouldn’t use a long bed off-road without bobbing the bed. Maybe it’s just coming from the wrangler world to the MJ world but the departure angles are already tough on my swb.

Still dreaming of an 88 chief build though. Maybe one day if I’m stateside again
