New clutch won't fully disengage

Recommended Posts

Long story short.  I had a leak that mechanics were slow figuring out what was leaking.  The culprit was the clutch slave cylinder that was leaking out of the bell housing.  I had them replace the clutch plate, the clutch master cylinder along with the clutch slave cylinder.  I picked up the truck Tuesday afternoon.  The clutch engaged about an inch from the floor.  Today, Saturday, when the clutch pedal is fully pressed to the floor, the clutch will NOT fully disengage.  It will not go in gear when the motor is running.  It has to be started in first or reverse and the engine has to be cut off to change directions.  Driving without a clutch is not a big deal once you catch the hang of it although it pretty snarky at stop lights.  I understand that there is no adjustment of the clutch pedal on MJs.  I just left it at the mechanic’s shop. There are no visible leaks.

Any guess what’s wrong?

The master cylinder needs bled, then the clutch slave needs bled. The shop did it in a hurry, and that just doesn't work. I'm sure you spent enough that it should be right, I would take it back and have them bleed it again. But at almost 60, I may do grumpy better than you.

Ok, then you can probably handle it.

I'm used to everyone at work being half my age, or younger. And there is a fair crop on this board that I have been on my SECOND career since before they were born!

Most the internal slaves are crap out of the box. I miss the first one I had. Best internal slave, never had to pump the clutch, never had a leak or bleed it when I needed to. It just worked.

I will l Iikely need to have clutch replaced in an 87MJ. What is brand of most trouble free?

Try this.

Pump the clutch pedal to the floor about 50 times. Walk away, if you can, for 20 minutes. Come back and see how it feels. The clutch pedal. Not your leg. Report back.

Assuming the highly esteemed gentleman from Prescott is not taking me on a snipe hunting trip, I did as instructed. At 50 pumps, the pedal felt the same as it did on the first pump. After waiting 20 minutes, the pedal felt the same as before.  This is on the 89 MJ that has just been worked on with the initial defective slave cylinder that was replaced with another mew slave cylinder a few days later.  By now, half of the CC has been out pumping their clutches waiting for your pronouncement.

The 87MJ, 4.0, 201K miles is at the mechanics shop.  The clutch on it is probably bad.  It has to be snatched into gear and out of gear.  It is worse when shifting the first few times after starting.  In 5 years, I have put only about 1500 miles on it if that matters.

I would appreciate it if you would have a look at another thread I posted just now about luke warm heat after having just about everything replaced with the cooling system.

Okay. Now we're getting somewhere. It's not mushy? Feels like it did before?  solid?

I'm really not sending you to the submarine races. Honest.

The clutch went out originally.  The mechanic replaced the clutch slave cylinder and the clutch master cylinder.  It worked ok initially but went out again after two days.  That is when I posted. On return to the mechanic, he (reverse) bled it.  After a couple of more days it went out again.  He replaced the new slave cylinder with a another new slave cylinder of a different brand.  Three days later, it is now working ok.
