Steering Column Swap

Hey guys, 

I need to swap out my steering column since mine is pretty badly beat up. I have a 1990 MJ 2wd auto, which I am in the process of converting to 4wd auto. I would like the shifter to be on the column as well if possible with tilt. What year XJ's will swap in and is there any good aftermarket options? Thanks in advance :)

Column shift XJs were made, but they are very rare.  Generally speaking, any automatic transmission equipped XJ will have a console shifter.  If you do find an XJ with a column shifter, it is probably optioned with a "police package" that may have a 120mph speedometer cluster and an extended idle switch on the dash.

 

If you want to keep your original ignition key, keep in mind at some point the key design changed.  I don't recall the date of the change, but I'm sure someone will chime in.

 

An 87-95 YJ Wrangler auto column may fit?

'91. The columns are cross compatible, but the key cylinders are different. '91 and up cylinders "snap" into the column with a spring loaded latch, '90 and down cylinders are held in with a screw. I do not know at this time if the key cylinders can be swapped across that year split.

I've looked into this a few times and read accounts of people saying it can be done. No personal experience though.

This is exactly what I plan to do to mine, I have a column shifted auto and I'm planning on doing a 4x4 swap in the future. I'm not 100% sure but the shifter cable might be able to reach the new 4x4 tranny.

Okay, so if I'm understanding correctly I pretty much can't get a column shift and it will have floor mounted?

And as it is right now, I have a separate key for my door locks and a different one for my ignition so that really isnt too much of an issue. 

Is there an aftermarket one that would have a column shift? I don't mind the 4wd being on the floor but would be nice to have the column shift for my build.
