96 Swap

Recommended Posts

I’m pulling the engine out of my 89 to drop in my engine out of a 96. What all do I need to pull out of the 96 to swap the engine/fuel injection?

I’m doing the 96 swap to rid my MJ of some of its current issues (it has a misfire and knock). I want to swap the dash and gauge cluster to the 96 style as well, is there anything else I should pull out of it?

Just to clarify, are you talking about 97+ swapping it?

No, I’m putting my 96 engine and wiring in it. I’m just wondering what wiring needs to get pulled to basically make mine an HO MJ.

I have read on CC and other Jeep forums that the 96 engine and wiring is not the most desirable.  It was the first year of OBD2 engine controls.  However, Chrysler was sill using the older OBD1 wiring and sensors. It was a hybrid of the old and new.

There are several threads on CC about this.

I read a lot of internet info when I did my 4.0 swap in a CJ7.  I already had a 93 4.0 engine and wiring.  Many of the thread said to get either 91-95 engines/wiring or 97+ engines/wiring.

(I read this on the internet, so it must be true.)

if you're wanting the fuel injection and wiring, you're going to be swapping alllllll of it.  nothing is compatible between the MJs and the OBD2 stuff.  :L:

what engine or engines can cheaply and easily swap into an mj and make it faster while keeping a near normal gas mileage 🚘🚀  ?

the single greatest bump in the seat-of-your-pants acceleration will come from a regear of the axle(s). :L:

So I’ll need engine/dash harness? Or should I put the Renix TB and wiring on the 96 engine?

the link in my sig has all sorts of swap details in it if you want to swap just the block. :L:

the 96 shares no wires and no connectors with a renix Jeep.  but it is a superior quality of all those parts.  it's definitely an upgrade and the 96 has the old-school dash to help make it easier.

Correct you will need all the wiring and fuel pump/regulators. The block itself will bolt up and you will have to use the Renix stuff for the easy quick way. Especially if you are still planning on selling it. When I put a 95 block in my xj I just swapped the intake and exhaust along with the Renix sensors.

Thank you. I’ll need to think on this.

I want a nicer quality, but I’m not sure if the work is worth it.

Everything.

And the flywheel. As others have commented, the 89 is Renix. The HO/Chrysler system was introduced in 1991 and it's totally different. The CPS operates on a different electrical principle, and the Chrysler ignition/EFI system needs to run with a corresponding flywheel.

Currently in the process of doing a 4.0l '96 swap into my 88 MJ. so This thread was helpful to some extent and I plan to document it was best as possible.

Sweet. I may be referencing that.

Thanks. So, correct me if I’m wrong-I need to pull all of the wiring out of the XJ, cut out parts from the XJ harness I won’t need (interior lights maybe) and splice in the MJ parts I need (rear section for taillights and etc.). Does that sound correct?

in the most basic of terms, yes. :L:    if the XJ had power door features, now's the time to contemplate that upgrade too.

Thanks. It’s got manual windows.

Yes and the fuel system if you are swapping the 96 fuel rail and injectors onto the new motor. The 96 system is return less so you have to factor that. Also from what I have researched I believe the xj sending unit and fuel pump drop right into the mj tank but the pickup tube has to be modified
