This Comanche must have have and interesting past, because the VIN and the vehicle do not line up. The Jeep was posted to facebook with the title "1988 Jeep Comanche Longbox." It was an almost rust free WI jeep. I got it home with the title and did a little homework, then to find out, the title said 1991. No big deal right? Then I remember what I was reading. If I'm correct, they stopped using the BA10/5 and renix engine harness in 1989, but my jeep has both of those. I bought it the beginning of the year. It was complete but didn't run. The previous owner claimed he was gonna cut it up for patch panels on his other comanches, but he saw how nice the frame was and couldn't do it. Although it supposedly spent it's entire lift in Wisconsin, the frame was 99% clear of rust, although I found out the floor pans are not as nice but not bad for 30 years in WI. JeepTractorGuy Posted January 11, 2020 Author Share Posted January 11, 2020 Project #1: Tear down: I started on the interior and the engine bay because 90% of the rust is in the floor boards and the engine bay was already torn down. The floors were a bit worse then I was expecting but are mostly solid so a few patches and some rust inhibitor paint and I will be all set. JeepTractorGuy Posted June 14, 2023 Author Share Posted June 14, 2023 Finally, after covid is over and I've settled into my home with my own shop, the progress is continuing!!! I'm so excited to be working on it again. Over the last week and into tonight, I got the engine bay, inner fenders, and fire wall primed and ready for paint. I strung the Comanche up by a chain block so I can get it at working height and i got to work. Pete M Posted June 18, 2023 Share Posted June 18, 2023 I prefer regular ol' paint for covering steel (unless there's a specific need for stopping already occurring rust or it's small enough to be powder coated). mostly because it's easy to see any rust problems starting, and easy to touch up and do repairs later.
