  1. This is my "1988" Jeep Comanche MJ. This Comanche must have have and interesting past, because the VIN and the vehicle do not line up. The Jeep was posted to facebook with the title "1988 Jeep Comanche Longbox." It was an almost rust free WI jeep. I got it home with the title and did a little homework, then to find out, the title said 1991. No big deal right? Then I remember what I was reading. If I'm correct, they stopped using the BA10/5 and renix engine harness in 1989, but my jeep has both of those. I bought it the beginning of the year. It was complete but didn't run. The previous owner claimed he was gonna cut it up for patch panels on his other comanches, but he saw how nice the frame was and couldn't do it. Although it supposedly spent it's entire lift in Wisconsin, the frame was 99% clear of rust, although I found out the floor pans are not as nice but not bad for 30 years in WI.
  2. So back sept of 2021 after over 100 xjs I finally got the chance to score a Comanche. Drove 2.5 hours one way and drug this 1988 off the side of a mountain literally. Factory 4.0 5speed 4x4 with tcase skid and gas tank skid so from the get go I knew I wanted to do a full 97+ swap. So I got it home and started going to town then proceeded to rip the entire interior out and found some rust :/ booo also picked up a rust free bed for it for 300 bucks Fast forward a couple months had a baby moved blah blah Picked up manual 98 doors and a Comanche Lund visor for CHEAP then got to work. Cut the bad floor spots out and installed some c2c floor pans. Had to cut some relief cuts but other than that they fit pretty well forgot to mention picked up a 98 donor and got the front clip fenders and wiring harnesses and dash from.(forgot to get s couple brackets so I’m buying another donor this week) yesterday I used the cut out steering column hole thing whatever you call it. And got that in. Still gotta do the wiring harness hole too. The Comanche whole is square as the xj one is more oval. as soon as I get the donor I’ll cut out the steering column bracket mount on the xj dash and a couple other pieces. So today didn’t really have time so I installed some kilmat in. so next I’ll start swapping in the dash brackets and steering column mount as soon as I have the appropriate mounts. I’m not good at write ups but I do take a lot of pictures so ask away if you have questions cause I have read every single 97 swap thread there is to learn this swap.
  3. Mid swap. Doing the Cummins 3.3 gonna run compounds new to the forums tho I’ve read a ton of them. Might get some answers and might help someone else. Gonna keep up with progress here. This MJ has been my favorite vehicle for years. The 4.0 was well worn and did her job. On to bigger things!
  4. Hello everyone, I'm newer to the forum but have used many of your threads as some solid guides to help out with my comanches. I have seen many threads about this topic before, but none of them cover exactly what I need or want. With that being said, as the title states, my 4WD is not engaging.. Took it to the dunes the other day and noticed that the T-Case would engage but not the front axle. I narrowed it down to the shift fork not locking the axle into 4wd. I have seen many videos and tutorials/guides on how to do a CAD delete and just manually lock it in so it never fails again, but I have been told this also engages the running gear and will cause more friction and wear down the road (not to mention take my MPG down a notch or two). So, I'm guessing its the vacuum lines that aren't working, but I'm having a hard time finding where the lines go from the front axle. Anyone have any ideas where I might be having a leak/where the lines are going to? Also, the jeep overheats when I put into 4 Low and drive it for a bit... And before I forget, I have three 1988 jeep comanches, all 5 speed manuals, all 4.0 inline 6's, all relatively stock (bought them all used). The one I'm working on is a 1988 jeep comanche base model, 4.0, 5spd, AC/Heat, NP231 Command Trac transfer case, 153k miles. Thanks guys.
  5. Been working a day or two every weekend on this truck for about a month and now it’s on the back burner while I find some motivation. 1997 Swap into an MJ. Was working fine until I decided to try and cut down the body harness on the XJ side. I'm wanting to eliminate the extra door plugs since it was from a 4 door and tidy up my interior when all said and done. If anyone has any tips or tricks or if you’ve done this before please chime in. What I can tell is when I removed the plug from the rear driver side it stopped the fuel pumps circuit. I didn’t realize it would do that since I thought the wire for the pump was strictly on the passenger side.
  6. Just bought my second Comanche. Don’t know which one to start on. Strongly debating on parting out my 1988 but it has the 4.0. My 1986 has the 2.8 and I'm considering swaping a 4.0 from a jeep Cherokee. I would love to get both running but the 2.8 & 4.0 I'm not sure how much work it needs. Never did an engine swap or anything. Needed some guidance on if getting a wiring harness for both and going down the rabbit whole will be worth it. 1988 is a automatic 4.0 sb pioneer 4x4 1986 is a manual 2.8 Lb xls 4x4

1988 Jeep Comanche Remix 4.0 | AW4 (I assume) | NP231 (I think) | D30 Front | D44 Rear | SWB I have a 4 speed auto and a normal t case. None of that part time stuff. Just 2Hi, 4Hi, N, & 4Lo. I just learned which Danas are which last night* Build Date: Not with the truck but if it on the cab side of the door I can see if I can get it. It has XJ doors on it. Current Location: Modesto, California. Status: Running but has some health issues so a garage princess. Notes: Bought the truck late April 2021/ Early May 2021. Came as pictured with me not knowing anything about Dana or her slew of other off-roading parts/friends. As far as I know it came as a 2WD truck and quite a few owners according to the car fax. I might have to pull that up again. The one main thing I know about Comanches was that powered windows weren’t common to have. So in the facebook ad when I saw it has powered windows I jumped on the chance. Has buckets seats and is floor shift. Didn’t want column shift.. Paint is Moss Green from Chrysler. Thanks for reading and looking!
  8. Hello, this is my first post on CC, and hopefully not the last. I located an MJ for a fair place from a local dealer, and I planned to purchase it with my dad today. It's an 88 MJ 2WD with the 4.0 I6 and a 5 speed Peugeot. It has around 173,000 miles and has no major rust on the underbody, just a few tiny tiny spots on the tailgate and such. It has good paint. The interior is ok, but the bench seat is terrible and needs to be swapped either with a clean bench or some buckets. So I went this morning with my dad and mechanic friend, but the dealer would not sell it to us because he said it would get heavy shakes around 50 mph...with my loads of Comanche research I have done, I immediately recognized it as "Death Wobble". The dealer said he was going to get it checked out at his tire shop and see what happens. I've read up and heard all about "Death Wobble" but there never seems to be a definitive cure. My good mechanic friend could probably diagnose it but apparently it could be a multitude of problems. So, yall, do you think we should purchase this truck even if it has "Death Wobble", and how hard is it to fix?
