2 Wheel Drive Transmission

Is it possible to convert a 2 wheel drive jeep transmission to 4 wheel drive?

I know on my turbo 350 and 400, you just have to change the tail housing and shaft. I was just wondering if it is possible with the Jeep/Chrysler transmission in my Comanche.

depends, usually invoves swapping the rear shaft

It is a 1998, I am told it is an AW4 I believe.

I just have 2 transmissions, both are 2 wheel drive. Would love to convert them if it is possible.

Click on your username (upper right hand corner) and go to Account Setting, then go to Signature. Put your vehicle(s) Year, Engine and Transmission information there.

What do you know, it worked. Now if only I could make the transmission work as 4WD.

Well...I have never done a trans on a 1998 MJ......but my best guess is no

....answer your own questions... Does the trans you are asking about have a visible removable tail shaft...the gm trans you reference have 4 bolts that you take off to drop the tail shaft.... Do you see that on the trans you want to convert?

Looking at the transmission, the case comes apart, it looks like in front of what looks to be the overdrive. I imagine that means no, it can't be done.

Yes, the 2WD AW4 can be converted to 4WD.

 

 

But it's probably cheaper to just buy a 4WD tranny from a junkyard.
