Loud fuel pump, fuel ballast resistor deleted

Recommended Posts

The fuel ballast resistor on my 87 has been deleted, and my fuel pump runs loudly all the time. My question is where are the wires that i need to find in order to put a resistor back in and quiet the fuel pump?I bought 2 new ballast resistors so i will have a spare, in case i have a problem. Thanks in advance for your advice.

The 87 did not come from the factory with a ballast resistor.  However, there was a TSB to add a ballast resistor to address the noisy fuel pump.  Your resistor may not have been deleted; your truck may never have had one.

I have an 87 XJ that had a ballast resistor added.

I looked at pics of the area where the ballast resistor is located, and my truck has 3 wires going to the grounding bolt there. 2  of them come out of the main wiring harness. If i am going to add a new resistor should i wire it in close to the fuel pump by the gas tank, and if so, how do i go about doing that?

That is Jeep's way of grounding engine compartment components in one location.  One of the wires is for the blower fan FROM THE PASSENGER SIDE of the engine compartment.  See Cruiser's tips to ground the blower to the passenger side.

Your pump is junk......

The extra noise they made was barely noticeable when new to anyone who didn't have exceptional hearing. It was a hissing sound that mostly only women could hear.

You're barking up the wrong tree.

Which replacement pump do you reccomend?
