mark corbitt Posted December 5, 2019 Posted December 5, 2019 The fuel ballast resistor on my 87 has been deleted, and my fuel pump runs loudly all the time. My question is where are the wires that i need to find in order to put a resistor back in and quiet the fuel pump?I bought 2 new ballast resistors so i will have a spare, in case i have a problem. Thanks in advance for your advice.
krustyballer16 Posted December 5, 2019 Posted December 5, 2019 Beside the air box. Kinda right above it on the inner fender. Sent from my SM-G973U using Tapatalk
87MJTIM Posted December 5, 2019 Posted December 5, 2019 The 87 did not come from the factory with a ballast resistor. However, there was a TSB to add a ballast resistor to address the noisy fuel pump. Your resistor may not have been deleted; your truck may never have had one. I have an 87 XJ that had a ballast resistor added.
mark corbitt Posted December 5, 2019 Author Posted December 5, 2019 (edited) I looked at pics of the area where the ballast resistor is located, and my truck has 3 wires going to the grounding bolt there. 2 of them come out of the main wiring harness. If i am going to add a new resistor should i wire it in close to the fuel pump by the gas tank, and if so, how do i go about doing that? Edited December 5, 2019 by mark corbitt mistake

That is Jeep's way of grounding engine compartment components in one location. One of the wires is for the blower fan FROM THE PASSENGER SIDE of the engine compartment. See Cruiser's tips to ground the blower to the passenger side.

Thanks, i already did that, Cruiser is a godsend to all of us MJ owners.

cruiser54 Posted December 6, 2019 Posted December 6, 2019 How noisy is the fuel pump? Even without a ballast resistor, my fuel pumps were not very loud. I'd be suspicious of the pump. Have you done the fuel pump ground upgrade?
mark corbitt Posted December 6, 2019 Author Posted December 6, 2019 The pump is very loud, and yes, i recently re-finished my tail-light lenses and added an additional ground wire to the drivers rear ground as you suggested. I was hoping it would help, but it made no difference in the loudness of the pump.
Comanche1 Posted December 9, 2019 Posted December 9, 2019 Is there a Napa part number for ballast resister?
cruiser54 Posted December 10, 2019 Posted December 10, 2019 Your pump is junk...... The extra noise they made was barely noticeable when new to anyone who didn't have exceptional hearing. It was a hissing sound that mostly only women could hear. You're barking up the wrong tree.

Which replacement pump do you reccomend?

eaglescout526 Posted December 13, 2019 Posted December 13, 2019 I think there's a NOS pump left but for how much it costs you do not want it. But yes Bosch was the OEM supplier
