Aw4 slipping in reverse

Recommended Posts

I’ve been driving my MJ a bit lately. I’ve driven it 2hrs 110miles on way and back. Recently (before trip) I noticed it will slip when I put it in reverse. It has 180k on it. Weird because it will go in reverse, engrave then while backing up slip then catch after a few secs. I’ve driven it a total of 3-4K since getting back on road. Fluid is good but I’m not sure on level. Can’t determine if trans stick is factory or not. Shld I drain and check amount or trust trans stick? Any other suggestions?

I have the same issue, I think. In my 01 cherokee. Reverse died after wheeling one day.
Put it in reverse and barely moves with throttle.
I havent had time to investigate it at all other than driving it into my driveway off my trailer. All forward gears are fine

CHECK THE LEVEL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dex/Merc ATF. .Easily drained and refilled.
Buy a gallon. Pull the plug. drain. Install plug and refill.
Adjust the throttle valve cable.
Fluid level was my first guess. Even though I'd think itd slip in every gear...but I checked and its filled right and i changed fluid not too long ago (less than 1000 miles)
Guess i should mention mine went out after rocking back and forth full throttle in a mud hole...

I thought reverse was a direct manual gear. I could be wrong. I'd unplug the trans control unit. Then see if it has the same problem. You will have to manually shift. Also, no down shift on the trans. So will have to brake to reduce speeds.

if by manual gear you mean it doesn´t need the Tcu to work then yes...

How in the hell can you make that determination on a trans issue when we know nothing about the basics?

now that you mention, he didnpt say if the forward gears were fine

Gotcha! ill be draining and refilling shortly. Prob replace the gasket as well.

If the pan is not leaking, do not remove it!!

Just drain and fill with Dex/Merc. Buy a gallon.

Have you adjusted the TV cable yet?

Did this issue ever get fixed? I still havent messed with mine and havent come across a fix. Everywhere I've read says I shouldnt have 1st gear either but I do. I can put it down in 1st and power brake it and do burnouts. But can't power brake in reverse. Or give any throttle in reverse without it slipping...fluid looks a little old but not really burnt...
