Ashtray in a factory MJ console

Recommended Posts

Ok , help me out . This is one of those "just need to know" questions .

Did anyones comanche come with an ashtray on the back of their console from the factory ? It would be nice to hear( actually is prefer to hear )  from some original owners as I want to exclude the possibility of the console ever being changed . I have three MJ consoles that DO NOT have ashtrays and I don't believe that Jeep / amc / Chrysler wanted you trying to reach back to put your cigarette out when there is a perfectly good ashtray in the lower dash panel right in front of you . I show different part numbers between the XJ/MJ in my parts books , but people are swearing up and down they have them from the factory.

Here's how they work out in the parts manuals:

BASE, Console
83501153, XJ, 1986
83502357, MJ, 1986, -87
83504859, XJ, 1987-90
83504859, MJ, 1988-90
4638404, XJ/MJ, 1991-93

:dunno:

The ones that I've seen.........the MJ has the brake lever insert/block-out plate, that is likely the difference in part numbers. Otherwise it's the same part.

Not referring to the block off plate for the emergency brake at all , nor am I referring to the short console either . Here is a picture of my original MJ console that doesn't have an ash tray . Although it has provisions for one , no one would be sitting behind the seats lighting one up ....

You're an original  owner right ?

If you count my wife who purchased it before we got married, then yes, original owner.

Oh, I still have her, also.

Lol , interesting....Thanks Tim !!!! I'm guessing you have the paperwork on it stating it came from the factory with a full console and it wasn't added at the dealer ? If so that will clearly show they did have a rear mounted console ashtray, contrary to what the parts manual is saying...

I don't have the build sheet, but the window sticker included "console with armrest $118.00."

Yeah, I get it.

Same part, MJ or XJ.

One gets a block off plate and no ashtray.

The other gets ashtray and no block off plate.

They made one console for two different applications, same part, different configurations.

This is done all the time.

Same with the cluster tray, same tray, four different gauge configurations, four different part numbers............still the same tray.

Wait. What.  Cluster bodies with the idiot lights are completely different from those with full gauges.

Nope. The cluster tray, shell, case, housing, whatever you want to call it, are all the same for Renix clusters. The HOs are different, but again the same housing for idiot lights or full gauges.

Didn't I say there was provisions for an ashtray ? Yes I did , that wasn't the question .... Did I ask if it was done all the time ? Nope . Do I care/did I ask  about the cluster ? Nope .If you can't answer the question I have at hand "ashtray factory in a   Comanche ? " please refrain from commenting on my post . Your post has derailed the topic at hand .

Again this is an 88 and I'm starting to see a pattern on the rear ashtray in question. Finding the build sheet on one of those may be the answer.

The “Options Report” that I got online for my ’88 Eliminator simply says that it has a “Full Length Floor Console" (Code CUF).  I also have a “Vehicle Information Report” that I got from the local dealership and it says the same thing.
