Jacob Ochs
Just a quick question, the typical break in period for a ring and pinion is 500 miles. Assuming that is the case under a constant load. Well my situation is, I just had 4.10 gears i nstalled in my front Dana 30. I'm obviously not going to be in 4wd all of the time, so what would the suggested break in period be for a ring and pinion that is technically just free spinning under no load? 1000 miles 3000 miles? It's a mystery! Just wondering if anyone could help me out! Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G891A using Tapatalk
zomeizter
time to log your miles while in 4wd, once you log 500 you have reached break in.
Eagle
In 2WD the front differential will be coasting, with the ring and pinion contact on the non-load side of the gear teeth. In terms of break-in for driving purposes, driving in 2WD won't be doing anything for you.
cruiser54
Why do you need to break it in? New cars don't need that......
Jeep Driver
Just drive it, you'll be fine. 99% of what get's passed off as 'imperial common knowledge' is nothing more than BS. As a demonstration of how much I reject common knowledge, I'm using 40w motor oil in both difs and my trans. How does Pro Stock break in a new 9" center section? A 1500hp thrashing down the 1/4 mile. 89eliminator
i like to break my gears in. ill throw both axles on jack stands. put it in 4wd and let it idle. you can put light pressure on the tires so that there is some load. does it help? i don't know. A-man930
The front gearset doesn't usually get the same attention that the rear does because we don't normally drive in conditions that would cause it to make noise. Change the oil at the same time you do for the rear and call it good.
