Cool find, 242 and shifter bezel

Found this on my Kentucky-Ohio-Illinois-Missouri junkyard tour back in July.  Factory black transfer shifter, and a 242 bezel from a very early XJ, note it says "hi lock" and "lo lock" instead of "4 part time" and "4LO".  Saving this for my 4x4 conversion, I have a burgundy interior, but with the factory black vinyl flooring.  I've kicked around using a burgundy bezel, but think black will look better.

I really liked the NP242 I put in my previous Comanche Sarge. I just got frustrated with the wiring issue that seemed unsolvable and the need for fresh drivetrain when I was too sick to work on it.

The console indicator probably changed mid '92 from one to the other from what I've seen in the junkyards and how the 3 '93 Grand Cherokees with 4.0L/AW4 and NV242 as well as a couple '94-95 XJs. It matches the New Process to New Venture company Change over.

I swapped to the 242 when i upgraded to the AX-15.  I've kept it in full time 4wd most of while i've had it. just to compare i did do some experimenting for mpgs 2wd vs 4wd. i didn't notice anything, so it stays in full time 4wd  I never bothered with the dash indicator but its on my long term goals.

So is getting the dash lights to work a pain?  Should I be looking for another 242 equipped XJ to get some wiring pigtails?  Hadn't thought of that.

the lights are highly overrated.  in my liberty they aren't even accurate (which is a good thing since the awd position is a no-light position and I don't have to stare at that light all the time :) )

Is it weird for me to want a 242 partly because that means both the PART TIME and FULL TIME lights in my cluster will have a purpose?

I think the indicator is out of an 86 or earlier with the NP229 case.

It was out of a very early XJ, don't remember exactly what year.

Do you remember if it was 4 cyl automatic or 2.8 V6 auto? The 229 didn't come in the 4.0L years because it was only 23 spline input behind 3 speed 727 or 9XX automatics (which the 4.0L also didn't come with stock) and it didn't come with std trans because the viscous coupler had trouble with shock loads of std trans in full time 4x4 high.
