Alternate source of MJs, sort off..

Recommended Posts

yesterday i saw a late model XJ with the rear chopped off... not just cut but they actually made a door for it, soemthing like this

with some welding skill and patience, we can turn any XJ into a semi MJ

XJs are everywhere, MJs are dissapearing

MJs only go up to 1992, XJs lasted till 2001

any of you have tried it?

This has been done many times over but usually doesn't end up being nice because it is done to beat up off-road only XJs. I've seen a clean 2 door done like this and it ended up looking like a Suzuki Samurai.

If I were trying to "build" an MJ, I'd cut a Cherokee front end and weld up an MJ or other small truck rear end together to make it look more like a truck. I've always liked the 4 door MJ mod but it's a hard thing to make look right.

It's a tempting idea. The '97 and newer XJ hatches are steel, so a couple of those might be suitable for making a new rear hatch at the back seat, and a second one for the tailgate. But it leaves very little space for actually carrying anything.

The only 4-door MJ conversion I've seen photos of is a long bed, and it's like an ocean liner. I think done with a short bed box it would be a nice conversion, and pretty close to what I'd like to own. Unfortunately, I don't have the fab skills to undertake it, nor do I have a shop to play in.

Completely agree that it's too long. I'd be interested in cutting a 2dr XJ and making a 2dr 4 seat shortbed. I've only seen this conversion done with 4dr XJs.

of course i mean cutting behind the front doors and installing a bed, i don`t know if the xj has the right subframe to do so... i don`t own one.. the ZJ doesn`t have it that`s for sure

The MJ is essentially an XJ cut behind the doors and a frame welded to it. Not the most ideal thing but it obviously worked very well in the MJ. If I did it, I'd butt weld the frame up to the XJ frame rails and then run a frame stiffener (steel plate) along the joint and the whole unibody frame rails to make sure its strong.

mistery solved for the 4 door

All XJs have the same wheel base, so I'm sure the 2-door and 4-door "frame" members are pretty much the same.

Somebody did a really neat job getting the floor pans off that shell. They must have spent a week just drilling out spot welds

Exhaust leak caused the exact same damage on my 1992 XJ. The rear wheel well and floor pan was toast.

LOL must of been one hell of an exhaust leak.

Yeah was split across the length of the top on the tail pipe. I bought it for 500 bucks and drove it onto a hauler. Couldn't complain too much.

An XJ is an XJ, MJ is an MJ.

You guys have not snapped a rear spring bolt on a XJ yet.

Not sure where you were going with this statement but heat, a hammer, and about 6 cans of pb blaster removes rear spring bolts on rust belt XJs.

The front leaf spring bolt goes into a captive nut that's mostly inside the frame rail.  They spin the captive nut.  Then you can either fix it the right way or the wrong way, most guys do it the wrong way because it's a lot easier than doing it the right way.

They're the same.  To the T.

Comanche "frame" rails are totally different from a Cherokee. They are thicker, hence the different seat brackets.

Yes, very different.  Totally different shape past the splice just behind the tranny crossmember.  Plus they put a hat piece on the floor to increase the height of the frame member.  And added some other bracing.

If you want to do it right to cut an XJ up and turn it into a quasi-MJ, it will be a lot of work.  I'd probably cut way more of it apart than recommended and splice it at the tranny crossmember point or even at the LCA bracket area.

Or get a Suzuki Samurai

Oh dear lord no....... Been there, done that, hated it.

I'd post a photo, but Photobucket is bringing the suck until I get time to download my stash and bail on 'em.

A buddy at work has a Samurai. It is in really good shape and runs well. His daughter DDs it to school and work. It all depends on how it was taken care of its ENTIRE life. I do have to say though, he struggles to find certain parts and usually they are pretty expensive.

Suzuki samurai is a good suv, i had one, but has one mayor defect: it`s not a jeep

anyway my wehole point was to cut behind the front door, the pic was just an example that with skill and patience we can make something as close a s posible as an MJ, with many XJs dying around there`s plenty of material to work with..
