NC Tom Posted May 3, 2017 Posted May 3, 2017 Hey, my 88 Renix era auto shift marker has suddenly stopped lining up with the correct letter. I saw a similar post from a while back on this, but it really didn't address my current issue. I'm wondering why it's off and how to fix it. Thanks
schardein Posted May 3, 2017 Posted May 3, 2017 If you have the column shifter, the indicator is attached to a small wire with a clip on the end. The wire goes through the plastic gauge housing, and the clip attaches to the lower end of the steering column, where it passes through the dash on the way to the floor. The clip has probably slipped/moved a little. It's a very low tech setup, but it can be difficult to see and understand unless you've had the dash apart. It can also be difficult to adjust because it's hard to get your fingers in there.
Dzimm Posted May 3, 2017 Posted May 3, 2017 As for the floor shifter, it has a little piece to slide and adjust it.

When you shift, you'll notice the whole lower portion of the column moves with the shifter. This is the piece the clip attaches to, on it's lower edge. Best guess is it clips on between 2 o'clock and 3 o'clock as you are looking at it from the driver seat. I would pull the main dash panel off to get a good look. It might be possible to get at it from reaching up under the dash, not sure.
schardein Posted May 4, 2017 Posted May 4, 2017 I did a quick google search for pictures but nothing. I'm sure someone here has pictures, even if it is only the indicator with wire and clip.
HOrnbrod Posted May 4, 2017 Posted May 4, 2017 Since you have a Renix - the shift indicator and cable looks like the below. http://comancheclub.com/topic/48960-automatic-steering-column-shifter-indicator/
Airborne Janitor Posted May 4, 2017 Posted May 4, 2017 Here's some pics: You can see the cable attached to the needle. Cable and clip hanging under the gauge cluster This is where the clip attaches.
NC Tom Posted May 4, 2017 Author Posted May 4, 2017 Awesome! :rock on: Thanks for all the replies! Should be able to fix this now!
Goose_XJ88 Posted June 30, 2017 Posted June 30, 2017 Thank you so much for the lower dash removal tip. It made it so much easier to get in there and attach it in the right place.
