Trim Decals Restoration ?

Recommended Posts

so i was wondering if it was possible to restore the letters and logos so that they will appear as new

but from what i have seen it looks like i can only restore the 4 JEEP letters since they are all metal

and all the other stuff is plastic so i will probably just have to repaint them

the main reason why I'm asking is because there is most likely someone else that has already tried doing this

so i was wondering if they could give me any advice

I would think using chrome reflective spray paint from a big box store such as Lowes would work. Or paint them another color. However if you decide to part with the command trac one, I would take it off your hands. I actually had this same thought this week when I removed my emblems. I think I am going to plasti dip mine black.

well i want to use the "Comanche" one but the problem is

i only have one and the vehicle would look silly with just one on the driver side

and none on the passenger side

same thing with the 4X4 one

and the Command trac is not going to be vacuum controlled any more so i really don't need that

then the XLS only looks good if its chromed

and it needs to be near some other letters or numbers like 4.0XLS or in my case 3.4XLS

other wise when you look at it it just won't look good

if the plastic ones can not be restored i might paint them or i might just throw them away

unless someone else wants them

No, no, no. They don't make this stuff any more. We don't throw away anything for an MJ.

There are paints that are very close to chrome. Look in the spray paint aisles at Wal-Mart, Lowe's, and Home Depot.

Someone may be able to get you another Comanche emblem. The 4x4 should be the same as Jeep used on the Cherokees of the same vintage, so that's not going to be difficult to find.

You still have a CommandTrac transfer case. Jeep still called it CommandTrac after they discontinued the CAD front axle.

The XLS was not positioned near the engine emblem.

Your right Eagle

if i have any parts left over that i don't want

like a smog canister lol

i will post a pic on here and see if anybody else wants them

finding a second Comanche piece will be difficult

and i believe the XLS piece will look good in the back of the truck on the tailgate

since i only have one

I used a fine polishing compound to clean up all my emblems (Comanche, 4X4, etc.) then masked off the shiny parts and sprayed the rest satin black. Turned out pretty good. Used 3M double side trim tape to put them back on.

AMC86Kid - PM me about the Comanche emblem.

Note that he said "polishing" compound (the white stuff), not "rubbing" compound (the other stuff).

There is a difference.

Quoted for additional emphasis!

Quoted again for even more emphasis. Anyone who throws away MJ parts is doing a huge disservice to the hobby.

I just did this little project this past weekend. I used painters tape and cut around each letter with an exact knife and then used matte black spray paint and painted the whole emblem. When the paint was dry I then removed the tape and used a gloss clear coat and did over the whole emblem. Turned out great! When I get my other one off the truck I'll post a side by side old vs. new. Hope this helps

I recently restored my emblems to match my graphite metallic wheels perfectly. I learned early that masking would be near impossible with all of those curves and that fake chrome in a can never looks as good as a high quality dipping job from a professional. I was in no mood to dish out $$$ for a professional chrome job, so I decided to use the metallic color scheme to match my wheels. I used a combination of silver metallic and graphite metallic Rustoleum spray paint from Walmart.

I started with an even coating of the silver metallic over the entire emblem, then a VERY VERY light coat of the graphite metallic to ensure the proper coloring to match my wheels. I used a combination of the silver and graphite because one color along was either too light or too dark. After the metallic paints were dry I hand painted the black border. I know my paints well and I knew that I could paint the borders black and any overflow onto the surface of the letter can be wiped off with my fingers. this gave me a straight border of black around the entire emblem!

After all the painting was done I cleared with clear gloss from Rustoleum and finished them up with 3M grey emblem tape. They came out awesome!
