87' COMANCHE PURCHASE

Recommended Posts

Hey Guys, new to the forums here. I am in the process of looking at/ buying a 1987 JEEP COMANCHE SPORT TRUCK. It's a 2wd, auto, 4.0L, 81,000 Miles, bench seat, 2 OWNERS, always garage kept' never in salt. I viewed it Friday, and taking it for a test drive tomorrow. Truck is in Amazing shape, NO RUST, no imperfections anywhere. Just wanted opinions on what one would pay for one in this shape and mileage. I have been looking for a Comanche for some time now. All tho the truck is not a 4wd it doesn't matter much, I already have a 4x4 grand Cherokee lifted 6", long arms, etc. So the 4x4 doesn't bother me too too much. Just wondering a fair price to offer him.

If this is the one, it is a SWEET truck!  I may not be a good judge of prices, but $6500 is high.

Given it is 2wd, I would start around $5k and see if he will come down.

Just my 2 cents

(That shade of blue is what we wanted when we bought ours, but it wasn't offer on the Laredo package.)

Agree. Bone stock, low mileage, and all the original sweetness looks unmolested. Obviously well cared for, and it's the first year for the MJ 4.0 engine. Trucks like that don't come around very often. I'd run a VIN check on it to make sure everything is as it seems, and if it checks out it's worth the asking price. And of course try the haggling dance as Tim suggests to knock the price down a bit if possible.

Yeah, it's a very nice, clean Comanche. One of the better ones I've seen. Thanks for the responses. I'll do a vin check on it as well. Owners are good strait forward people.

Spend some time crawling around underneath the truck as well as carefully eyeballing the engine bay too. ID the rear axle if you can, but this truck looks like it's the bare bones edition since it has no A/C. And just for grins bring a pocket magnet and place it on the normal rust places to see if it sticks. If the seller is hiding anything they don't like to see potential buyers doing things like this.

It sure looks very legit to me though.

My immediate thought was that I'd easily pay $5,000 in a heartbeat for a low-mileage MJ with no rust. Look at ads for newer trucks like Rangers that have similar mileage, and you'll quickly realize that even $6,500 is a good deal. A few years ago I paid $6,500 for an XJ that had more miles and a LOT of rust underneath. (Granted, it was 4WD, but it also needed a lot of work.)

Have to agree with SVPete, that bed is immaculate. Did no one ever put even a cardboard box in it? If the truck is truly as described and looks as good the photos - jump on it! You can easily do a 4x4 conversion later if that's an issue.
