Jtrux Posted August 12, 2016 Posted August 12, 2016 http://performancecooling.com/1991-2001-jeep-cherokee-champion-2-row-core-alum-radiator/ I'm looking at replacing my stock radiator (1987 2.5L "open" system) and was considering an aftermarket option. Has anyone used the one I listed or have another recommendation? Also, are all radiators the same on 2.5L/4.0L MJ/XJ's? I know the shroud will likely be different but will the radiator itself differ?
88whitemanche Posted August 12, 2016 Posted August 12, 2016 The 4.0 radiators only came in the 2.5s from 97+ xjs... You can convert it but you would have to find a fan shroud from a 97+ xj to do the swap complete...unless you plan to do electrics fan and eliminate the mechanical fan... I currently have that radiator in my 98 xj...had it for only a couple months...paid $80 for it at a local radiator shop so far so good....
Jtrux Posted August 12, 2016 Author Posted August 12, 2016 Ah, so in my year, the 2.5's and 4.0's had separate radiators? Good to know. The other option I have is to have mine flushed at a radiator shop but I was kinda hoping to just upgrade altogether. There's a really high-end Griffin unit apparently that's quite nice. I believe the P/N is 5-70095. If anyone has that, I'd love to hear their opinion about it.
Blue XJ Posted August 13, 2016 Posted August 13, 2016 I have been running a Champion brand aluminum radiator in my big block Duster for 3 or 4 years, it keeps the monster motor at 180 just fine regardless of outside temp. I'd buy another one based off my current experience.
Swampy Posted March 1, 2018 Posted March 1, 2018 I just got a stock replacement for my 2.5l radiator from rockauto and there are these 2 fittings on the bottom that I can't find on the stock radiator.

gogmorgo Posted March 1, 2018 Posted March 1, 2018 Yeah, just run it as is. There likely isn't much alternative anyhow.

gogmorgo Posted March 2, 2018 Posted March 2, 2018 If you leave them unplugged it's a chance for something to get in there which could cause premature corrosion. But If you seal it complete, then the change in temperature as the radiator heats and cools could create extra pressure and pop something that maybe shouldn't pop. So maybe covered is good, but not necessarily a full plug.
HOrnbrod Posted March 2, 2018 Posted March 2, 2018 Remove the upper and lower barbed hose fittings from the tranny cooler and cap the two nipples with 1/2" ID neoprene plugs. They won't pop off.....
