Double Six Posted August 5, 2016 Share Posted August 5, 2016 What causes brand new fuel pumps to Quit working? is it the trash and rust that's in the tank? I had one put on 900 miles ago and it has quit already . Relay is working but pump isn't. gogmorgo Posted August 5, 2016 Share Posted August 5, 2016 If there is crud in the tank plugging it up, it would also be showing up in the filter. Pop it off and dump it out, just to see. Probably wouldn't hurt to change it either if it's been a while. Something that also happens sometimes is that the rubber hose in the tank is worn out, and the stress of pulling it off and onto the new pump can cause it to fail, so the pump will still run but just pump right back into the tank. cruiser54 Posted August 5, 2016 Share Posted August 5, 2016 Here's the problem: Nobody but Bosch makes a good pump. Airtex is the worst and they're now making the pumps for Carter. Double Six Posted August 5, 2016 Author Share Posted August 5, 2016 I've changed the filter twice in that 900 miles .it wasn't completly stopped up but got a lot of rusty colored fuel out of it . I don't know what kind of pump it is.the shop where I bought it told me that was the second one he had put on it. you would think he would have pulled the tank and cleaned it out ,but I 'm sure he didn't do that .He was just trying to get it to run, so I could here it run before I bought it. Double Six Posted August 6, 2016 Author Share Posted August 6, 2016 it's an 86 model with the 2.5 On the bracket that holds the 3 relays there is a metal relay that has two electrical conectors that go on the bottom. it is held on the bracket with a small bolt .it looks sort of like a starter solenoid .in the manual i don't see anything that looks like it .anybody know what it might be. Check the ground behind the left (I think it's the left anyway) tail light. That's where the fuel pump grounds. If you bought an Airtex brand pump there definitely is trash in your gas tank... the fuel pump. Those pumps tend to live short and very loud lives. As for the fuel pump ground, I would just perform the procedure in the link below no matter what. Double Six Posted August 13, 2016 Author Share Posted August 13, 2016 Got the test light out ,climbed under truck pulled the fuel pump connector harness apart where it plugs in to another plug .I had power there.I checked the orange wire where it connects to the pump on the outside near the lines and had power there.So I am assuming the pump was one of the cheap ones that was not any good.I am ordering a Bosch from rock auto and will see if that was the problem.
