Dando
Bought this cluster a couple years back now and I'm finally trying to get my speedo working 2yrs later, better now then never I guess. I have the transfer case from a 95 (231) and this cluster from an unknown year. So I can start figuring out what parts I need can anyone id this cluster? 64 Cheyenne
Only matters if you know whether or not your Renix or HO.
jimoshel
Renix up until 1990. From 91 on they were HO. You can't tell by the case.Only the 91 with the speedo cabl was different.
Minuit
Renix and pre-Renix clusters had a blue case, HO had a white case. That style seems to have gone away by the middle of the '87 model year, so your cluster came from somewhere between '84 and '87.5 or so. Easily my favorite of all the XJ/MJ gauge clusters. I want to put one in my '89 bad, but I'd need a different speedo cable...

Also my favorite design.
Dando
Thanks everyone I do love these gauges. So what am I looking at in terms of making the speedo work? Also you may notice that the temp gauge is different, I'm assuming due to the different motor options. I have a 4.0 now any way to know that it is reading correctly? The needle typically sits around 220 but on my other jeeps the straight up position was more like 200-
schardein
As others have said, it looks like an 84-87 cluster. A difference I've noticed is the temp gauge. Earlier (84-86) ones I've seen have the blue colored band for the lower part of the scale and the red band for the high end. Later ones only have the red band. The needle typically sits around 220 but on my other jeeps the straight up position was more like 200-210 A quick look suggests the temp senders are the same between 1984-1987 and 1988-1991. The early and late senders look exactly the same to me, so I assume the reason for the change is the slightly different temp gauges. You'll want to run the early model sender for accurate readings on your different gauge - assuming I'm right about the difference between the two. If you run the correct sender for a 1990 truck I imagine the gauge will indicate 220 when the actual temp is 210.
HOrnbrod
87-91 models with an engine coolant temp gauge all use the same sender, p/n 53005309. Also the temp gauges themselves are interchangeable between the 87-91 clusters.
Dando
Now that the subject has been brought up I guess I would be more interested in getting the temp gauge reading properly before the speedo. So being I have a 4.0 should I try a sender from an 87 because the earlier models didn't have the 4.0? I am currently using the sender for the 90 4.0. The 86 thru 90 all take the same temperature sending unit, and they all take the same oil pressure sending unit. This is per the factory parts manual. Dando
I guess my question is do I have an 86 or earlier cluster? If so what do I do to get the gauge to read correctly? HOrnbrod
What's the cluster p/n? There should be a tag on the back with the p/n 8350xxxx or 898350xxxx.

schardein
Might need to research a little deeper. Two sensors could have different part numbers, but have the same electrical specs and the only difference being the type of wire connection. Not saying that is the case, but could be. schardein
Also, from what you wrote above, the temp gauge appears to be working and more or less accurate. I would continue to focus on getting the speedo working first.
Dando
I sorry for being a real old thread back to life but it is my own thread and I still need some help with the same problem. It’s been another 2 years and I still have an non functional speedo. So so far we have determined I have a cluster from most likely an 84-85XJ. So that being said what do I need to make this clusters speedo work for me? I literally have nothing parts wise other than the cluster (been installed for years) and the np231 pulled off my old 95xj (the np231 still has the electric speedo stuff from the 95xj installed to block off the hole). Any help? I really want to get this clusters speedo working but will abandon the cluster for one that’s easier to work with if needed. Just want it working again as I finally have the truck in a state the wife can drive it unaccompanied and she wants the speedo working before she tries that. Thanks
Eagle
You need a speedometer cable for an 84 thru 86 Cherokee. It will NOT have the white nylon snap-on connector at the speedo head, it will have a metal tab that gets screwed to the speedo head to secure that end of the cable. On the transfer case end, the cable drive "quill" simply replaces that electronic speed sender. The cable screws to this "quill," so if you don't have that, you'll need to get one from a junkyard. Be sure to read up on how to properly orient the quill for the number of teeth on yous speedometer drive gear. You should be able to transfer your speedo drive gear from the electronic sender to the cable drive quill.

Dando
My truck does not have cruise control. Which of of these options from an 84 am i looking for?
DirtyComanche
The ATP Y803 or Pioneer CA3004 are likely the best bet. The first one is for cruise control applications, so it's out. And the last one is 100" long, which is insanely long... An 83" cable with screw on ends should be fine.
