I just got done rebuilding the engine on my Cherokee it made that noise every time it shut off for awhile. pulled the valve cover and seemed to be coming from the lifters(they are new like the rest of the engine) noise finally went away not sure what or why it was. Sounded great when running just got that sound after turning it off.  Seems to have gone away now.

thanks i figured that much just wanted to make sure it wasnt anything serious

Mine does it every time I shut it off. You can try to change your oil and filter to good quality stuff and see if it goes away. My engine has blow by so I refuse to put good money into a dead horse.

Sounds like normal metal thermal de-expansion to me. Metal parts of the engine and exhaust expand at different rates when hot. The engine parts start cooling down immediately when the key is turned off, and the metal contracts at different rates. This creates tension within the metal and when the metal relieves the stress it sometimes creates an audible 'tick' sound. My engine does this all the time too.

It's not the exhaust and little tinks you're thinking of Don. It is the lifters losing their "pump up" upon shut down. The oil pressure will take a second to build after start up as well.

New one to me Bo, never heard that before with hydraulic lifters.  Thanks - good info.

I don't mind the noise kinda gives it some character if u ask me..What do you mean when you say your engine has blown by?

The piston rings are worn and are allowing compression by them into the crank case. This causes over pressure to blow seals and push oil out the breather into my air box.

Before anyone says check the CCV line for a blockage, I did a leak down and compression test. The rings are bad.

even if you have extra blow by, it can be solved from pushing that oil in to the box, for less then 5 dollars.

Sorry about all the dumb questions guys but just wanna learn a lil about my engine...so i did a compression test on mine i have 150psi on all cylinders except number 3 where it had around 145 psi..what does that say about my engine? and Noriyori_Kudo how can he solve that oil getting into the box issue for less than $5?

150 across all cyl and one at 145.  Sounds good to me.  All cylinders are within less than 5% of one another. I wish mine was so even.
