AeroNautical
A few weeks ago a buddy of mine hit head on with another car. Both drivers were taken to the hospital, but are alright. The lady in the car was at fault, but I don't know the details. The insurance company marked the MJ totaled and took it away. I didn't see it personally, but my other Jeep friends said it was very salvageable. I told him to try and get it back as a salvage, but they wouldn't have given him the $8,000.00 for it. I live 400 miles away, so I can't track it and pull parts from it when it hits a JY. It was an immaculate Jeep, a little rust under the belly, but practically perfect. He got it because of me, and it served him well for close to two years. Sad to see it go. I don't have pictures of the wreck itself, but I do of it in its glory: Kinda funny how insurance pays more for the truck than anyone buying it would... Zebvance
maybe they used NADA Values. http://www.nadaguides.com/Classic-Cars/1988/Jeep-Corporation-AMC/Comanche/Pickup/Values
AeroNautical
His was an 89, but I doubt that would make much difference. It was pretty damn clean, I guess they marked it as "Like New" and a classic.
Megadan
Dang that was a clean truck. Shame that they totaled it, but I think it's BS that he couldn't buy it back.
Wiggilez
I'm kinda jelly about the AMC racing sticker on the bed.
13 Legion
8 grand? Yes I woulda took the money and bought another one! With that kind of money you could find a clean Jeep. Not sure if that type of circumstance is different state by state, what insurance you have or both. Had a similar situation when my daughter totaled my 05 Civic. Could have bought it back salvage but than would be titled salvage or eventually rebuild. Selling the car down the road would have been tougher, but I guess if I planned on driving the car until I junked it that could have worked. Then insurance would be another issue. I doubt your insurance would cover you on a vehicle they just paid out as totaled. The body shop owner told me in order to maintain the coverage that I previously had I would of had to have vehicle rebuilt to standardized safety specs that they have to adhere too for insurance to cover. Long story short... The owner of said body shop stated' I make a living fixing wrecks.... Take the money and run.. You made out!'
FrankTheDog
No matter how hard that jeep was hit there would of been a lot of salvagable parts to keep others on the road. Hope it doesn't get crushed.
johnj92131
Lets remember what is really important here: Nobody got seriously hurt. The cars/trucks are just metal. You buy another car/truck and everybody moves on with their life.

DirtyComanche
Reminds me, there's one in the boneyard here. 89, black, longbox with a 4.oh. It makes me sad every time I go there. The body damage is something I could fix just working on it in the evenings over the course of a week.
gogmorgo
Generally insurance write-offs end up consistently at the same auction place, probably depending on the insurance company and the location. It likely wouldn't hurt to try to find out where it'll end up, and then keep an eye on the listings till you see it. The owner at the time probably wouldn't have to poke too hard to find out where it went. I'm currently watching the local listings for a co-worker's '99 XJ that she just wrote off. Only needs a bumper and header panel, she drove it for a couple weeks before the insurance company got back to her. I had her down to $700 for it but insurance came back with $3700... she paid $3600 for it, four years and 50,000 miles ago. I think it'll go for ~$600, and clear $2500 if I want to flip it, leaving a decent chunk of profit after all the inspections it'll need. Also a note on the inspections, in many jurisdictions the rebuilt one is more an inspection of your paperwork to make sure you didn't steal it, strip parts, and then put all the parts back after "legally" obtaining it at auction. AeroNautical
As much as he loved that thing, he wasn't quite as avid of a Jeep guy as I am. He's taking the money and most likely buying a newer Tacoma. Like I said, I'm a bit far to try and track it. It was in the Rock Hill SC/ Charlotte NC area if anyones wanting to check those local yards for it.
