1991 2 dr XJ in the junkyard.  Highly optioned, 4.0, auto, 242, power everything, overhead console, rear limited slip (at least had the tag on the cover for no slip fluid).

 

It had what looks like a "hood open" switch.  I've never seen one.  I was thinking it was for an alarm, maybe aftermarket, but the switch bracket and switch and wiring all look factory.  This is the pass/front of the engine compartment.  Fender is removed but the bracket uses the factory holes and appears factory painted.

Could be I suppose, although why would you just use the factory mercury switch?

 

Alarm makes more sense to me. Remote starters also usually use a hood switch so it can't be accidentally pocket-started while someone's working on it.

Hood Ajar Switch for 96-98 ZJ Security System, and others.........

 

Each door, the liftgate, hood, and the liftglass in the liftgate have an ajar switch that connects to the Body Control Module (BCM) . The ajar switches are normally open when the doors, liftgate, liftglass and hood are closed. When one of them open, its ajar switch closes and connects the BCM to ground. In response, if the Vehicle Theft Security System is armed, the BCM starts the alarm.

But this was on a XJ.  I got the VIN, run it by Chrysler and see if they list a factory security system as an option?  But your picture looks very close to what it is.  Same location, probably the same part as far as the switch goes, just no bracket.  Also, it did have the keyless entry module in the overhead console.

It didn't have the underhood light.  Which surprised me since it had so many other options.  Of course it could have disappeared over the years or even at the yard.

Factory security systems were an option during the OBD2 years and up for all Jeeps I think. I had one on a 96 XJ I bought new in Guam. It had the same hood switch. The system was a POS, went off all the time and I had it disabled. The 96 I had was nearly underwater at one time from a typhoon and I got it very cheap from AAFES at the naval base. I figured it went off all the time because of salt water corrosion. The Jeep ran great for the two years I had it, then I sold it to a local for a bit more than I paid when I left.  :yes:

Like Don said, part of the factory alarm. Was implemented 91+ xj's. I have one installed on all my jeeps tied into my aftermarket DEI alarm system as a trigger for the hood, similar to the factory set up but without issues.

If it had a retractable underhood light the nutserts would be in place.
