To CAD bracket, or not to CAD bracket? / RRO reliability

Recommended Posts

So, the time has come to make a decision to run CAD brackets or not.

Has anyone here had a GOOD and RECENT experience with RRO? AS they are the only company that makes the most complete CAD bracket for our MJ's.

I want the better ride that they offer for the price. But, I do not want to end up being one of RRO's very unsatisfied customers that wants to go "GTA" on their butts because they failed.

In a way, I kind of want to wait till after I swap in my WJ 30 and my set of adj. LCA's and see how that goes.

On the other hand, I do not like doing things twice. Yes, I know that if I go long arms at some point after it would kind of be along the same lines.

I know that, ultimately, it is my decision. But, if I get enough positive reinforcement that I will most likely order the RRO MJ CAD brackets.

Thank you for your time.

Side note:

Anyone here running an MJ Longbed AX-15/NP242 (non-SYE) with an F8.8+ flange adapter. What length is your rear drive shaft?

Glenn Wakefield is a crook. Get Rough Country DBs and you'll be fine without the braces. I have been running them on MJs for years with no issues.

RRO sells good ideas but their customer service and products are $#!&.

Oh... are we talking about this CAD system? http://www.rocky-road.com/cherokee-control-arm-drop.html

If so, that's troubling because I wasn't too far from ordering these once I rebuild the funds after Christmas.

*EDIT*: I guess this is the same people of which you speak... http://www.jeepreviews.com/where-to-buy-jeep-accessories/280/rocky-road-outfitters/

First time I ever heard of drop kit being called a "CAD." CAD is usually an acronym for Central Axle Disconnect. One more example of why it can be important to use words when trying to communicate.

That said -- several companies have been offering control arm lowering brackets for years, and RRO did NOT invent the trailing braces. The '88 MJ I bought back in 2000 had a Trailmaster 4" lift in it with their control arm lowering brackets. It was good quality and it did what it was supposed to do -- but the front springs and the rear AAL were too stiff and it rode horribly. I removed the lift and gave it ti Frank the Dog, and I couldn't be happier.

you might be better off running the RC brackets and just making some braces.

Back when i had short arms on my MJ I built my own drop brackets and ran them for a while without the braces,i later threw some braces together,it was a pretty simple project.

Not to hijack this thread, but after reading all the negative reviews, I think this is what I'm going to do.

This is my EXACT setup as of recently.  I will go measure for you and get back to you in a little while.

*EDIT: I measured and it came to just shy of 50" from center of u-joint to center of u-joint.

I can say that after swapping in/lifting my rear with the 8.8, my drive shaft's length did not need to be altered.  It pulled out of the back of the T-case just over an 1/8th of an inch.

Thank you, everyone for your responses.

I will not tempt fate, and buy RRO stuff.

On that note.. since braces are a moot point for my MJ, what is the difference between RE and RC. Other than the price. Because I found a seller on amazon that has a set with free ship for less than the RC brackets.

I ordered a set for my XJ about 5 years ago from rocky road. I got them fast and they fit good. Haven't touched them since. They are really solid and a better design then rough country's or rubicon express'. I didn't have any issues so the customer service aspect I can't comment on. I would probably order another set if I was in the market. Every offroad company has some bad reviews. Look at team Cherokee. Some love em. Some hate em.

Thank you kindly, sir!  That should work just fine. Although I had have an additional driveshaft to cut down if it fails! Maybe, in the future after I get all this put together, have it made as a spare.

They don't have some reviews that are bad. They have a LOT that are bad. So bad they have changed their user name on EBay twice and have over 20 BBB complaints.

Their design is no different than RE, RC or Trail Master. They all stole the design of Trail Master. The only difference is RRO actually made a set of MJ specific braces that are not really even needed on an MJ.

their design is different than everyone else's.......

the main bracket is one piece,RE and RC are a two piece design.

This is correct. One piece design. The set I got looked great and had nice welds. But... admittedly this was five (or more) years ago.

I haven't ordered anything from them in years but i personally never had an issue with them other than slow shipping.

i have seen some of their non MJ/XJ products that are pretty scary and dangerous, one of the sketchiest rigs i have ever been in was a YJ with a failed RRO soa set up and steering.

one of their bolt on high steer set ups had cracked and the rear bolt on soa had slipped bending the stock perch and caused the D35 to spin an axle tube.

it also had very bad track bar geometry making for an interesting ride.

Caution - Thread Hijack:

onlyinajeep726, did you ever finish up the handbrake conversion? Writeup anywhere? Didn't see it in your build thread.

Unfortunately, I never made a how-to on that, but I did take lots of pictures which I can post.  I have to revisit it anyway because the way I affixed the cable end to the lever ended up breaking, so right now, it's rendered useless.

I also scored two functioning foot brakes at the JY, so I even thought about going back to that.  Decisions, decisions... lol.

I'm running all that except for the 242, I'm 231 and the axle is in the same spot. There plenty of room for the extra inch or so you get from the adapter

I posted up in my Build thread, but thought I would update.

Found a seller on amazon that had a NEW RE 9900 kit + free ship, for LESS than the RC kit. THey have a 99% rating. I think there was another seller that had about one for about the same price.

Unfortunately, not Prime eligible, but they should be here later this week.
