Metric Ton Leaf question thread

Hi all,

 a few questions to the guys who have converted or are converting to metric ton leafs,

or to anyone with a factory longbed Big Ton/Metric Ton MJ

 

 

Where did you get your leafs, and why (General & Hells Creek both carry them).

 

Shortbed or longbed MJ?

 

Do you ever max load them? (2205 rating)

 

How have they held up so far?

 

 

 I'd love to use my shortbed MJ to pick up 1 ton pallets of pellets now and then.

It would be a short (non-highway) trip with a 2220lb payload (me+ a ton of pellets)

in a shortbed MJ with Metric Ton leafs, a D44, and appropriately rated tires.

 

Anyone?

I got mine maybe five years ago from National for my LWB. They lifted the rear end almost 3", but did settle down about an inch in the following year. Never maxed out on a load, but did several runs with 1000-1200 lbs. in the back. The truck dropped very little if at all. I purchased them from General Spring because they had the best price at the time, and I was unaware of Hell Creek. If I did it again, I would purchase them from Hell Creek because of their good customer service.

The Metric Ton package was offered only on the LWB Comanches, so putting MT springs under a SWB is "experimental." The springs are the same, though, so I can't think of any reason not to do it.

 

The part that bothers me is that reports on the MT springs from General are that they usually (always?) result in a lift of a couple or three inches. I'm not willing to deal with that. At this point in my life my MJs are going to be primarily street driven, or light trails (i.e. fire road type stuff) only. If I put in new springs, I want stock ride height, not a 3-inch lift in the back.

 

Of course, in stock trim an MJ is spring under, so you could always use lowering blocks to get it back to stock height. Except that a 3" lowering block will create a LOT of axle wrap, and leave very little ground clearance.

I don't drive the MJ as much as I used to, so the ride is secondary to the weight capacity,

 but I'm happy(and maybe a little surprised) to hear the ride is good.

I am leaning towards Hell Creek as well, but have an open mind.

3" wouldn't be a deal killer, whatever they end up being, I'll deal with.

This is for the 2wd "Grandpa' Jeep,

 it has soft/sagged Rusty's 3" springs up front to level it now (2" lift maybe),

 I would probably swap coils to stiffen the front/better balance spring rate with the back even if the height is a perfect match.

I am curious to see who has used a SWB with Metric Ton leaves to full capacity, since, as you said, the factory never offered a SWB MT MJ.

This is an on road only Jeep, so I have no need for lift,

 I did put (old, sagged) front lift springs in after I originally got it, but that was because the back end was so high.

 It still sits slightly rear high now with the sagged front lift coils,

but anything from stock height, to 3" wouldn't be a deal breaker for me as long as I could make the front and rear heights proportional (rear 1-1.5" higher than the front is perfect IMHO).

Dana 44 locker and Big Ton springs and shocks

Heavy duty electrics, cooling and block heater.

Skid plates, tow hooks and low profile mirrors.

 

Max load: 50 40 pound bags of wet peat moss.  Didn't phase it in the least.

They never offered a production SWB with mt springs but, Old guy lives a town over has original 91 pioneer 2wd SWB d44 mt springs it doesnt have mt badges though just pioneer, you could order any combo you wanted

i put the metric from general in my LB maybe 2-3 months ago and it did raise it about 3"  - so i had to raise the front a bit or it looked half-assed

 

i also had to drill out the perches a bit to get the locating tabs on the springs to fit in (not that big of a deal), but its because i have a dana 35 and have been told any other rear end you would be OK. i haven't loaded it down,  but did have about 1200 lbs in the back and it brought it down maybe a inch - i was surprised at how little it moved, and it seemed like it was nicer to drive w/ the weight - lol - i am happy with the springs, but honestly if i did it again i would give some serious thought to the hell creek springs as i wasn't to happy with the 3" rise initially and hope it will settle down an inch of so sometime,  then all will be good

This is off topic, but is any one interested in the front coils that came on a metric ton package? Got a pair that are good as new sitting in my basement for years. I am the original owner of my truck and ordered it with the metric ton package. That's how I know. :cheers:

Speaking of which..... I also have a factory metric ton long bed pioneer with factory Meyers plow. I noticed the front coils seem much thicker then standard... is this true? And mine also has control arm drop brackets. Everything's pretty well rusted (along with the rest of the jeep) so I know these have been on there a long time. Would these two things be a factory option or an early aftermarket?

Interested? Are you offering to give them away or are you selling them? If you are giving them away, please state that. If selling, post an ad in the Classified For Sale forum including your asking price.

Factory Big Ton/Metric Ton package on my 91.  Previous owner hauled dry wall in it and added 2 overload leafs on each side.

 

I have personally put a pallet with just over 3200 lbs of blocks (60 54lb blocks plus a wood pallet) in the back of the truck and drove it home up a 400 ft vertical climb.  Load did not bottom out and the truck was just fine.  But I kept the next 5 pallets of blocks to about 2800 lbs each.  54 x 54lbs plus the pallet.
