RescueDuck33 Posted June 16, 2015 Posted June 16, 2015 I have a 88 MJ and the motor is finally gone. I just looking for a DD. Nothing extreme. Would you buy a used LKQ motor, Autozone Long Block crate(No Fault Motor),Go HO motor. Let me know I plain to keep this MJ for life.

Finding a nice low mileage renix era engine at a junkyard is best in my opinion , but is probably the hardest to do as well . I have went the autozone route before with bad results :head gasket went 8 months later and I asked them to replace both at the same time and they would only pay to replace one. Sure enough the other head gasket went months later when it was out of warranty . A jasper engine would be a good option if you want a rebuilt engine with a good warranty and reliability IMO . Cruiser54 has a detailed write up how you can install certain year HO engines running renix electronics . Look in his signature and you'll have all the info on swapping it in .

big66440 Posted June 16, 2015 Posted June 16, 2015 Depending on how much time you have I would buy a rebuild kit (with quality brand name parts) and have a reputable shop rebuild it and enjoy it, this way you know EXACTLY what went into the motor and what the motor has been through once it's back in the comanche.

I would second this if you know of a shop with a good reputation. Or at the very least pick up a good condition used motor and at least have a basic overhaul done (new rings, bearings) Now, as to what I would do? Build a 4.6 stroker with 4.0 rods with a mildly cleaned up renix head. Won't make lots of horsepower compared to the HO engines, but oh the torque...

Even I can put an engine together and have it run.] I once picked up a surplus rocket engine from NASA down at Cape Canaveral. Mounted it in a '55 CJ. It fired the minute I hit the start button. Haven't seen the Jeep or the engine since.

Jeep Driver Posted June 17, 2015 Posted June 17, 2015 What would you look for as a good donor? 1989 Jeep 4.0, AW4, and NP231 - $600 (Maynardville) I have the drive train out of a 1989 Jeep Cherokee. It has been removed for several years. I do not know the mileage but it did run when taken out. Since it has sat for some time the engine most certainly will need to be rebuilt. The transmission will at least need the pan removed and cleaned up. I would think the transfer case is good to go. I will separate: Engine $200, Transmission $300, Transfer Case $200 Text message preferred. 865 six 40 two 898 This is in my backyard.....but this is the kind of ad that I look for.
