Jacob Ochs Posted March 6, 2015 Posted March 6, 2015 I have 5 auxiliary lights currently hooked up to one switch. They are extremely bright and sometimes when ping around a corner I don't have time to reach up and turn them off if another car is coming! So I wanted to know how to wire them up to come on with my bright light switch! Also will this make my lights dimmer at all? I know I'll have to use a relay (which I have plenty of) but I would like a simple diagram if possible! Thanks in advance! :)
Jeep Driver Posted March 6, 2015 Posted March 6, 2015 You need to do the headlight harness, if you have not already. The wire from the headlight switch THEN becomes a trigger wire to the aux light relay. You will THEN have two completely different light circuits operated by the brights switch on the steering column that are independent of each other but operated by one switch. One to the headlights and one circuit to the aux lights, neither are receiving power from the headlight circuit itself. Tap into the brights wire at the headlight and run that to the trigger of the relay.

shelbyluvv Posted March 6, 2015 Posted March 6, 2015 Don't use Scotchloks. They hold moisture and you will be chasing electrical issues before long. Do it right the first time. Are these roll bar lights you are hooking up? You should not run more than two lights off of one relay and switch. You are begging for a fire.

I think that depends on the rating of the relay -- the ones I've generally seen are rated for 40 amps. I have no idea how much the lights draw. But there's no reason at all why you can't control two or three relays with a single switch. The heavy draw from the lights is all on the relay(s) -- the switch only transfers a tiny load to switch the relay(s).

Jeep Driver Posted March 6, 2015 Posted March 6, 2015 Yes, ground will trigger also, my Efan is operated through the temp switch which is a ground switch. However, the ground to your brights is probably always grounded.
Crash Posted March 7, 2015 Posted March 7, 2015 If I am not mistaken, most places the law states that no more than 4 lights, including headlights can be on at one time on any public highway. Off-road is different. Maybe consider a multi-position rotary knob in the setup to select which pair/total lights to run.
Rockfrog Posted March 9, 2015 Posted March 9, 2015 I was planning to use my driverside headlight plug to trigger a set of driving lights (hi) and fogs (lo). My passenger plugs triggers the headlight relay harness. I want to run the stock hi/lo wires to separate dash switches, then back to the relay, and to the lights. Same idea as the headlight harness, just switched.
WiscoXJ Posted March 9, 2015 Posted March 9, 2015 This is a horrible drawing but the jist of what I want is to have them cone on with the brights, stay off all the time and come on alone. I'll use a three way switch
