Hey all, so I was curious which 5 speed trans I have. After looking at this thread:

http://comancheclub.com/topic/11104-how-to-tell-whether-you-have-an-ax-15-or-a-ba105-5spd-trans/

I decided I must have the BA-105, because my MJ is an '86 with the 2.5L i4.

Well i climbed under the jeep and look what I found, does this not look like an AX15? Does that mean someone swapped it?

The 3rd pic ^^^^ clearly shows the "midplate" mentioned in the thread. Am I just lucky?

Thanks for any and all input/opinions!

AX5. Ok. So how reliable is that trans? Better than the BA-10? but not as beefy as the AX15?

From my understanding, this is correct.

The AX-5 is not as beefy as the AX-15, but there are those who would say it's better than the BA10/5.

Personally, I rate them about equal but AMC/Jeep must have thought the BA10/5 was stronger or they wouldn't have used it when they introduced the 4.0L engine in [model year] 1987.

the comparison to the ba-10/5 is kinda irrelevant since you can't just swap them.  the engine block to bellhousing bolt patterns are different between the 4.0 and 2.5l.

I abused my AX4 for many years, it was still working fine when I finally pulled it to swap in the AX15.

IMO the AX4/AX5 are great light duty transmissions.

The BA-10 was represented  as a medium duty trans. Barely somehow. And we got it because Renault owned 46% of AMC back then and chose to buy that POS trans from their buddies over at Peugeot.

Absolutely correct. (Unfortunately.)
