For a second I thought it was the transmission, then I pulled over, put it in 4wd to exit the highway, and soon after my rear wheel passed me. I thought '88 was a year of non-c clip dana 35? Is it possible for this to happen to a non c clip rear?
Wesleypipesyo Posted December 30, 2014 Posted December 30, 2014 I thought all jeep D35s were c clip. I could be mistaken, but the YJ and TJs both had c clips. They make a c clip eliminator.
Hiroler Posted December 30, 2014 Author Posted December 30, 2014 The google machine says up until 91 they were non c-clip, but this appears to not be the case. That's why I put it in 4wd and even tried to keep going in case it was just a driveshaft issue. I never thought about the rear axle.

Jeepman Posted December 30, 2014 Posted December 30, 2014 D35's up to 89 are NON clip 1990+ are C-clip... Looks like you lost the bearing and retainer which is what holds the axle in... This is why you NEVER reuse the bearing retainer...
HOrnbrod Posted December 30, 2014 Posted December 30, 2014 Your 1988 had a non c-clip axle originally; they switched to c-clip D35s in 1990. I don't see the c-clip channel on the splined end of your axle as below either, so you did not have a c-clip D35.

Since I was technically still on 695, the tow only took 15 minutes. The whole ordeal was very quick. D35's up to 89 are NON clip 1990+ are C-clip...Looks like you lost the bearing and retainer which is what holds the axle in...This is why you NEVER reuse the bearing retainer... I'm trying to picture how this happens. I had replaced the bearings on the driver's side, but not this side.

I don't see the c-clip channel on the splined end of your axle as below either, so you did not have a c-clip D35. Correct. He had a catastrophic bearing and bearing retainer failure.

When you did the DS did the new bearing come with the retainer or did you re-use the one you pulled off

Rockfrog Posted December 31, 2014 Posted December 31, 2014 Yep, it happens, had the same issue our on a Ford 9" on a bronco. Bearing retainer failed and the shaft spit out. That collar is really all that remains the axles in, no less failure prone than a c-clip ... just that the d35 made c-clip failure so common.
Blue XJ Posted December 31, 2014 Posted December 31, 2014 Looks like a non c clip axle to me. No place for yhe clip to go. Sounds like you didnt tighten the bearing retainer bolts enough. Edit: looks like everyone already stated what I put, i should have read the whole thing first.
