jimoshel
Been talking to a fella about buying his 1991 XJ, 4WD. He says it has a toyota transmissin in it. 50 miles is to far to drive just go sight seeing. Has anybody ever heard of a Toyota tranny in a Jeep? He wants $400 for it and claims it has a good engine, but I just never heard of a Toy tranny in a Jeep. Have you?
Strokermjcomanche
The aisin aw4 was used in toyota trucks , I believe that's what he's referring to .
yxmj
He is probably referring to an AX5 or 15......They were both made in Japan and available in some Toyota products.....He just does not realize that the use in Jeeps are what made them famous! Here is some info http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/ax15-transmission-anyone-using-one-thoughts.566719/ The Jeep/Dodge AX15 5-speed, the Jeep NV3550 5-speed, the Jeep NV1500, the Toyota R150F, R151F & R155F, the 87-92 Toyota Supra Turbo R154, the Isuzu AR5 and the Pontiac Solstice\Saturn Sky\Chevy Colorado\ GMC Canyon MA5 5-speeds all share the same case to bellhousing bolt pattern (Large Pattern). As such there are a number of possibilities that can be had when a 5-speed is desired: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Aisin_transmissions

HOrnbrod
Not really. Various versions of the A340s were used in many Toyota, Volvo, and Lexus models. The A340E is identical to our AW4s except the dipstick comes in on the left side of the pan.
zackcj7
The AX15 and R150F can be interchanged with a little work to the input shaft. Same with an AX5 and a G54.
Incommando
Aisen Warner was a joint venture between IIRC Toyota and Borg-Warner and they sold trannies to anyone not just one make. So you might find an Ax5,AX15, or AW4 in most anything although they may use a different name.
jimoshel
It was a AX15. Gave him $400 for the Jeep and had the wife drive it home. Now she wants it. Women.
