jimoshel Posted December 5, 2014 Posted December 5, 2014 Are they the same? Have a 1986 MJ with a 2.8 motor and a bad carb. Auto parts store wants $450 for a new carb. WTH? Only paid $150 for the whole truck a couple years ago. The old carb is to damaged for a rebuild kit. Don't ask me how it got damaged. I am thinking a 1986 S10 carb will be a direct replacement. and maybe the '84 and '85 carb. Anybody know ?
benjy_26 Posted December 5, 2014 Posted December 5, 2014 If the MJ carby is made by Rochester, then it should be thr exact same thing.
Strokermjcomanche Posted December 5, 2014 Posted December 5, 2014 I have an 86 s-10 blazer it is TBI . 85 was the last year for a carb . As far as fitment , I don't know .
jimoshel Posted December 5, 2014 Author Posted December 5, 2014 Just how hard , or what would it entail to swap to a TBI? Could I keep the same manifold? It's a good running engine so I really don't want to swap engines. Don't know squat about Chevy engines anymore.

Or you will have to get a stand alone GM ignition......I have no idea what GM used for CPS. Weber carbs are $380 http://www.ebay.com/itm/like/201221464842?lpid=82
Strokermjcomanche Posted December 5, 2014 Posted December 5, 2014 I've never had the two side by side , but Off the top of my head the harness, fuel pump, computer, sender and I believe the heads are different from carb to TBI , but that I'm not sure of . Seems like alot of work . Looking for a replacement carb or a intake that will take a a different carb would seem like a better option to me .

Got a couple shelves full of carbs. Should be able to find one can make work. Won't be the first time I've taken a one inch piece of aluminum and made a carb adapter.
HOrnbrod Posted December 6, 2014 Posted December 6, 2014 Your best option is to pick up a used carb from Ebay or elsewhere like THIS ONE and throw a kit on it.
Strokermjcomanche Posted December 6, 2014 Posted December 6, 2014 Maybe a cc member has one . Maybe put a want ad?

Check the Rockman site and catalogue....they list the R22SE as a Rochester 2 bl carb used on both the S10 2.8 as well as the MJ 2.8 pull the carb and use the gasket as a template to you collection of carbs....one might match...... Right after I typed this...I thought of something....I had an 85 XJ wagoneer......I am positive it had a ford carb on the 2.8........ :dunno:
dasbulliwagen Posted December 6, 2014 Posted December 6, 2014 There is a kit out there to put the Holly Weber 2 bbl progressive carb (same as used on some Ford's) on the 2.8. Its a much better carb than the Rochester. Might be something for you to look up. I put a kit like that on my old FSJ Waggy 4.2 after its original carb fel apart. I've also used them on air cooled VW's a couple times.
