New Comanche owner, hello everyone. I have a couple questions.

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I just bought a 1986 Comanche X with a 4 cylinder and 5 speed manual. It also has the 7 foot bed. It is in pretty good shape and is mostly all stock. I think it may have the Rusty's suspension 2 inch lift kit in it, it seems slightly taller and had Rusty's shocks and steering stabilizer.

I plane to keep it pretty much stock. I also have a JK Unlimited Rubicon with a ton of mods, and a Hemi Commander on Old Man Emu suspension. I bought the Comanche for lumber store runs, hauling yard stuff, and other pickup truck duties. I've drove it 3 hours to get it home from where I bought it, and it's a cool little truck. All 3 of my Jeeps are silver too, matched set.

I have some questions:

Where is a good place to buy stock replacement parts? The hose from the air box to the throttle body has a rip. I can make a universal hose work, but I thought I would also try to find a OEM one for the best fit and quality (maybe on the quality)

I would also like new turn signal lenses. There are cracks in a few of mine and the are pretty faded. There is some other stuff I need to fix to make really nice, headliner is missing, seat has a few small rips and the foam kind of sucks, horn button is missing, and I would like to replace all the weather stripping.

What oil do these little 2.5 engines like? I am guessing they are not too picky. I have not had a small American engine before. I have had many European cars from the 70's and 80's and ran Castrol 20/50 in the summer and 10/40 in the winter with good results. I found that the recommended oil is 10/30. Should I stick with that?

I think I will change the engine oil tomorrow and maybe the gearbox, transfer case and diff's too. I also have to bleed the clutch and flush out the brake fluid. I am an over maintainer. I take care of a Eurocopter EC 135 Medevac Helicopter as a job, and fix, maintain and modify small airplanes and helicopters  as a side business in my hangar.

I have to say that this is one of the nicer forums I have looked at as far as the posts and replies. I hardly look at the Jeep JK forums due to off subject posts and constant flaming and harassment between members.  I am glad I found this forum.

There is no one-stop-shop for MJ parts.

MJ specific parts are JY only such as some of the interior panels and tailgates and tail light.....etc.......

Drive line wise........I have yet to not find a part but they are limited........you'll have a lot of digging to do.

For example: aluminum VCs are JY only but your oil pan is still available through Mopar.

And today I bought a NOS TBI........you gotta know where to go and dig deep.

If you can't find it on Ebay, Rockauto, Quadratec or Morris 4x4, you will probably either be able to find it here or at a junkyard. There's a guy on this forum who can make you a brand new headliner - I have one and they're pretty nice. Everything from the doors forward on the outside of these trucks directly swaps from Cherokees (like turn signal lenses)  and some interior parts as well.

Oil wise, 10/30 is a good bet. Some people use Shell Rotella T5 and T6 in their engines with good results. Oil is extremely subjective and you'll find a million arguments for a million products if you look.

Hello - You're gonna like it here -

Cruiser's Renix Tips in the DIY forum will probably be your favorite place on CC for awhile

Parts - - All over, likes been said - - - -  Two of the best:

http://stores.ebay.com/brocksjeepparts/ -  - He's a member here, I think, & comes up with some excellent stuff - I've never been disappointed

An excellent headliner source from another CC member is in Classified-Vendors forum - SMSHEADLINER DISCOUNTS - -Lots of testimony, including mine, to what's offered.

Oil's been beat to death here & other places, but . . .

Scroll down & look at Don H's info on Chevron - - He's also an amazing source of OEM part numbers.

http://comancheclub.com/topic/41655-engine-broken-in-oil-suggestions/

Sounds like you know your way around the web - - Here's two of my oft used searches:

http://www.retailmenot.com/view/advanceautoparts.com - - All the deals from RockAutoPep & so on - Just put the vendor in the search window & click.

Google search for forum specific info - - For inst:  site: comancheclub.com best oil - or - site: naxja.org best oil - - - Gets right to it most times

Hope this helps a little

Make sure you study up on the proper transmission fluid to use in your AX5. Most gear oils on the market are not safe for yellow metals (brass syncros) and will destroy the transmission. I have never found a suitable gear oil on the shelf at the parts store for the AX5 or AX15. Thus, I have followed Chrysler's and other's recommendation and use a quality synthetic motor oil in the transmission. Mobil 1 for me, even in my rusty 176k mile '86.

Welcome to the club.

x2 on Castrol 10w30. I run high mileage Castrol in my 4.0 and in the 2.5 when we still had it. Year round, but I'm in Western WA, it doesn't get super hot or super cold. Just rains :laughin:

I have found some killer deals on eBay for Comanche stuff. Like they said, the junk yard is a great place to look if you need something that day, or if its something that can come off a Cherokee.

Anyways, welcome

10W30 motor oil is frequently used in the Aisin transmissions in our trucks. Pennzoil Syncromesh($) and Redline MT-90($$$$) are said to make it shift better. Regular gear oil will just eat the syncros.

Keep in mind that the transfer case takes automatic transmission fluid. I believe you use Dexron/Mercon. The diffs take 75W-90 gear oil for normal driving, 75W-140 if you plan to tow anything.
