Comanche County
Every year I get a lot of snakes in the backyard. Our old beagle got bit on the snout several times. Yesterday we caught our pup "Jessie" barking at the ground, went out and found this guy. He was little, about 18 inches long. Sure enough, she got bit and her upper lip swelled up an hour later. She won't stay still for a picture, if you come near her she just rolls over for you to rub her belly, she's such a good pup, She's only about 6 months old and I bet she was just curious about the snake. She got nailed on the left side. The swelling is down this morning, hopefully she learned a good lesson.
az comanches
When my cattle dogs were pups there was a big bull snake(non-poisonous) that lived under my horses water barrell. He gave them a good scare a few times, now they are very careful when they see one. Never have encountered any rattlesnakes on the property, but they are around. The chickens ranoff the bull snake, hav'nt seen any snakes for a while.
ftpiercecracker1
We had an australian shepherd that got bit on the face just like your's did, only she swelled up about 5x worse. I have tons of pics, but they are all hard copies. I would have to scan them to upload em. That was up here in TN. We get copperheads from time to time and even a few timber rattlers, but they are very few and far between. Now when i lived in FL, thats a different story. Diamonds backs as big around as your calf.
jimoshel
Had a Colorado Diamond Back nail my J10 a couple years back. Swelled up twice it's normal size. Started to junk it but it ran OK so just re registered it as a 2 ton.

Comanche County
Yeah, I'll fiddle with copperheads all day long, but I won't mess with a big rattler or a moccasin. I'll step on em with my robot leg and let em get a mouthful of carbon fiber but my hands ain't going anywhere near em.
Keyav8r
They're all poisonous. The only good snake is a dead snake. Clarification: this post relates to legless reptiles and should not in any way be construed as a comment about politicians or lawyers.

Yeah, moccasins are the problem here on the lake, especially this time of the year when they can get aggressive. Gus, my fearless but aging Cocker Spaniel, still alerts me when one is present in the backyard and has sense enough now not to attack it as he used to do. Mr. 9mm or the olde 22 single shot, whichever is handy, dispatches the bastid quickly and they become instant turtle food off the end of the pier. johnj92131
I killed a small rattler in my back yard 2 summer ago. Cat was playing , trying to get the snake to play. Not a smart cat! 4 or 5 rattlers so far this summer on my block. Helped kill one of them. Animal control got a couple. The other two slithered away. A long handle shovel is a good thing for snakes. Eagle
They're all poisonous. The only good snake is a dead snake. My sentiments exactly. I occasionally make exceptions for garter snakes and black snakes around the perimeter of the property but ... stray onto the lot and they're toast if I see them. I ... don't ... like ... snakes. Comanche County
Chickens are good defense against smaller snakes, Guineas are better but too darn loud and annoying.

JeepcoMJ
I don't mind them. But none around here can kill me, and I certainly don't want one as a pet.
mpace6a
I don't mind them. Usually deal with them with the .22 or a shovel, whatevers handy. Leave the rest alone to deal with more annoying pests.
