ggcnash
I've never been able to find a good way to determine years on tcase or aw4's maybe you could help with that but it did come from a
jimoshel
I believe the date of manufacture, month and year, is stamped on the ID tags. January, 1998 March, 1998 1985 The numbers to the right and just below the attaching screw.

jimoshel
I've heard that also. However every one I've ever checked was the same year on the tag and the vehicle it came out of. The tag date stamp is the year the TC was made. I don't think they stockpile them and use them 2-3 years down the road. I believe it's accurate enough for government work. ggcnash
Thanks do you know the answer to my question about no extended housing? Thanks in advance
shelbyluvv
The late 96 and later 231s had sealed output housings. There is no SYE on that case. It simply has the sealed output housing. The older cases sealed on the driveshaft slip yoke.
jimoshel
One of the other guys on here might be able to help you better on that. I do know that very seldom did they change over at years end. Usually they made changes mid year meaning early '96 would be different than later year '96. The only way you're going to tell here is by tail housing, output shaft set up. mvusse
The early cases had an internally lubricated slip yoke. In these the transmission fluid inside the transfer case lubricated the slip joint. The later cases are sealed, and the slip joint is lubricated with grease held in place by a rubber boot. But, since these are sealed, they are a good candidate for a inexpensive hack-n-tap slip yoke eliminator.
Alexia
All 1996+ XJ transfer cases should be external slip yoke and 23 spline input. Since you have a 1991 MJ it should also have a 23 spline output from your existing AW4 transmission making it compatible with the new transfer case.(Making an assumption here on originality.) Otherwise you will have to count the splines if you are unsure of the transmission's age.
carnuck
Don't forget '97 model would be built after 08/96 so parts would have to be made/delivered to the plant before that!
