johnj92131
This thread on MJ seats got me wondering if the seat back angle can be ajusted on XJ/MJ bucket seats: http://comancheclub.com/topic/41652-seats-who-has-what-in-their-mj/ My seats have a black lever on the side bottom side of both buckets that looks to be an adjustment of some sort. Well after some Google searching I discovered the lever is an adjustment for the seats on rocker seat bases on the XJ. Since my seats are mounted on standard MJ brackets, the lever does not do anything at all. On the rocker seat base, the lever allowed the whole seat to "rock" to a different position but not changing the angle of the seat back to the seat cushion. Does anyone here know how to modify the XJ/MJ buckets so the seat back angle can be changed? Lots of imported car have had this feature for years. Thanks for any help or pointers. yxmj
If I understand your question correctly then I do not understand your question.. :hmm: ...all of my buckets have the option to "tilt" the back of the seat.... :dunno: (But I am speaking of XJ an YJ seats I do not have factory MJ's)
gogmorgo
Yeah... every single vehicle I or my family have owned within my memory has had tilting seats. The factory MJ buckets in my '91 have: a lever under the front to slide them forward and back a lever at the base of the back that adjusts the tilt a lever at the top of the back to fold them forward to access the small space behind them. johnj92131
OK, that is good to read. Unfortunately for me, I have never been able to get the seat backs to move/adjust. The tilt forward mechanism works just fine. Will have to check out my sister in laws old XJ to see how much effort is required to move the seat back. My seats were put together from the best of about 8 different buckets. Perhaps something was not put together quite as it should have been. Thank You both. Alexia
Mine is the same way and is broken some how. I actually broke the plastic handle off trying to get it unstuck.
Rockfrog
my old stock 88 MJ buckets had the seat back angle adjustment ... small black lever on the door site of the seat base. One lever was missing but the function was still there. The "new" seats I put in had the same functions - came from a 92 2dr XJ. Now I have all functions on my seats again. Tilt forward via shoulder height lever, seat angle down by by door side butt cheek, and seat position between my legs. There are also two small adjustable rubber bumpers inside the seat frame that can be adjusted to remove the rattling seat back many of us are used to. Been inside my seats a fair bit over the last month ... one of my seats refused to tilt forward ... so I fixed it.
87MJTIM
Mine has the handle. For the seat to tilt, you would have to have the seats slid forward in order to tilt back. Otherwise, the head rest hits the glass. I guess you could tilt it forward, but you would be sitting nearly verticle. IMO, not comfortable on a long drive. Rockfrog
I run my drivers seat slightly tilted back ... but I'm not 7' tall either ... an inch under 6'.
johnj92131
Anyone know how to remove the seat back adjustment lever? I want to get a look at the tilt mechanism and see if I can figure out what is wrong. Thanks
Rockfrog
the one down by your butt cheek just pulls off, same way the window handle pulls off. The one up by your shoulder needs a pin punched out, and then full seat back disassembly.

92tanMJ
There's four bolts on the floor, per side if you want to pull the seat it might be easier to work on that way? :dunno:
