Ozzie Locker? Anyone Tested?

Torq Masters moved their production to the USA and changed a few details in the process. Lokka is the Australian company that used to make the Aussie for Torq Masters and are selling them themselves now. These are the same as the Aussies from yesteryear.

 

I have had an Aussie in my 8.25" rear under my Comanche for a few years. Worked well off road, but didn't really like the road manners. Good thing that truck was not a daily driver anymore. I sold the axle complete with locker and disc brake conversion when I moved to one tons. AFAIK it is still happily going its merry way under the new owner's Comanche.

I have an Aussie locker in my rear D44. I like it, but if you let off the clutch to fast it causes the back end to buck a little...  I don't recall it doing it as bad when I was running in full time 4WD.  next week the new front gears are going in.  I can then look for a difference in handling between 2wd and full time 4wd.

 

It was very easy to install.

Wowsers Your right !!!  It says it includes shipping!  I was thinking LSD would be much better road manners but for this price...  My truck is a Automatic now which may help the road manners...

I'm running 17" Rubicon moab wheels and tires (few inches bigger than stock) which may help the road manners.  At least on my CJ with bigger tires, it got better on the road with a lock-right.... Here's what I found:

It works just like any other auto-locker on and off road.  You will feel a difference when on the throttle in turns and when you come off the throttle.  Its the nature of the beast.  Installing a lunchbox in the 8.25 is a real pain because of the c-clips.  If you break a shaft on the trail, prepare for much cursing.

I have found that having someone to push the tire in while I removed or installed the clips helps.

 

Good price but I had an Aussie fail in my 8.25 under the KJ. One of the pieces shattered. I know that one bad apple doesn't spoil the whole bunch but they would not warranty it. I had to send all of the internals back to them and they said I had too much center pin play from wear ( the jeep had less than 20,000 miles on it) and was an "unhardened" factory piece. They said that I should have bought a new one when I got the locker even though nothing in their ads/ordering process told you to. Granted that was Torq-Masters making the decisions and not Lokka. I liked it up until it broke. I had a 6-speed stick and drove it in rain, snow, ice, and highway on 31's.

Did some net sleuthing: as stated this is the original Aussie locker design. If you read the Lokka website you will find all sorts of things about the design and manufacturing and tolerances Australian but what they don't mention is that a few years ago they moved at least some production (maybe all now?) and all metal sourcing to China. They developed failure problems ( hmmm...like my shattered side gear?) and that prompted Torq-masters to move all production and metal sourcing to the U.S. for the current design.

 

In addition to Chinese metal and maybe manufacturing this is the older Aussie design and is a bit louder and rougher on engagement then the newer design being sold here. Many were satisfied with the old design but the new design is being talked about like it is about as smooth as the more expensive No-slip.

 

Again this is from reading posts on various boards on the internet. Although it seems to pass the B.S. test its validity is unknown.

Easy installed and a great low price option I had one for over two years in my front Dana 30 with 35's put over 20,000 miles on it and I was pretty hard on it off road. If you put it in the rear axle it will have a bit less road manners than a posi but if your serious about wheeling you won't care for the slight difference on road you want both wheels to lock any any angle and a posi doesn't always promise that. Go for it

After 6 months plus of daily driving the locker has worn in and is much smoother on the road, and not very loud at all.  I don't notice it much in general unless I'm on a slippery surface.  I'm happy with the purchase for the price paid.

Not a limited slip and not a full locker. Not a spool.

It's a locker that replaces the spider gears in your open carrier.

I've been checking out Lokka, Aussie, and powertrax. I. Going with powertrax no slip in the rear in my Dana 35 for sure. Probably the Aussie up front in the Dana 30 since I have the vacuum disconnect axle (now cable).

Any one know why the part numbers on the lokka website are different from the xj to mj on the exact same axles? The Aussie website isn't listing any mj part numbers should I go with the xj specs?
