comanche1989
Hi everyone, I recently rebuilt a 1992 jeep cherokee engine and threw it in my 1989 Comanche. After the initial break in I changed the oil and filter, then after the next hour of use I changed the oil and filter again. Now I am reaching the 500 mile point. With all the other oil changes I ran wix filters and Rotella T 10w-30. Should I stick with the diesel oil because of its high zddp and zinc additives, or should I switch to a regular oil like valvoline, havoline..... ect? Another option would be to throw amsoil z-rod oil in, because it is very high in zddp. (~1440 ppm) Suggestions and/or criticism would be appreciated! Thanks, Sam
Strokermjcomanche
You can run the additive along with your choice of oil and it doesn't hurt to run it longer

comanche1989
I'm not sure that I want synthetic this early in the engines life. If I were to run a synthetic, I would run amsoil zrod because I already have it
87Warrior
Nothing wrong with running synthetic in a new motor. I run Mobil 1 high mileage 10w-30 in all of my 4.0's, regardless of mileage. It meets ACEA A3 rating which has antiwear properties like ZDDP. I rebuilt my TJ 4.0 110k miles ago and have been running the Mobile 1 High Mileage since break-in. It still the smoothest, most quiet 4.0 I have ever come across.
danbyrambler
I've used Rotella 15w40, a 40 base, higher temp, diesel oil for a long, long time in many vehicles - - - I have recently switched to Chevron Delo 400 LE 15w40 because of this info which I deem reliable - - Seems to be a tad better for the Jeep 4.0L & is no more expensive than Rotella. hornbrod Moderator Moderators 10,528 posts LocationSweet Home Alabama Posted 02 December 2012 - 11:50 PM Rotella is good, but I prefer Chevron Delo 400 LE 15w40. Year round. It meets the API classification SM for older engines, and still has a 1300 ppm zinc count, unlike Rotella, and is one of the few motor oils that still do. Higher zinc content is beneficial for our flat tappet 4.0 engines, whether during cam break-in or maintaining longevity because it reduces the metal-to-metal friction no matter what the age/mileage. Chevron Delo 400 is a diesel spec motor oil and I've been using it for years in my Jeeps, but especially in the stroker with a mild cam.Filters? I use the extended length Purolators. http://comancheclub.com/topic/36262-preferred-oil-weight/ :wrench:
HOrnbrod
Thanks danby. I saw this post and was going to reply, but you already did for me. Nothing has changed since I originally posted that, and I might add that Hesco recommends Chevron Delo 400 LE 15w40 also. And it still has the highest zinc count so no additives are needed.
dasbulliwagen
You can't go wrong with the suggestions above. Ive been keeping my eyes out for SL and earlier rated oils for mine. Mobile 1 High milage in certain weights is SL rated, but I recently got a deal on 11 gallons of SJ rated 15/40 Mopar Diesel oil for $40.00. SO Ill be using that for a while! GirsMJ86
I took Don's advice and switched to the Delo 400 and I gotta say it seems great. My 200k+ engine runs a bit quieter (still a noisy 4.0 diesel) but it's what I'll always be running in my 4.0s from now on. Just for reference I went with a Wix filter since I couldn't find the extended Purolators in my rinky-dink area.
comanche1989
Thanks for the replys everyone, looks like I'll be sticking to the diesel oil!
xjrev10
I have used Rotella in all my 4.0s with WIX filters. My local parts store has a sale on it a few times a year and I stock up. I run the 5w40 in my diesel pickup year around but the jeeps get 10w30 Dino.
