Option To Buy A 2000 Cherokee With A Blown Motor For $300....

Recommended Posts

....I already have the 87 Comanche 2wd sportruk  "Sgt. Rock" with the 6 and 5spd. I' do not yet know what engine/trans is in the Cherokee but it is a 4x4 truck.

my question is how much of the stuff from a 4door 2000 Cherokee will interchange with the 87 Comanche?   front doors ?  Seat/console ? 4x4 parts ? size of factory wheels? what rear end is under the 2000 model?

My trucks door window regulators are in bad shape, could swap out entire door assemblies. Bench seat is shot, would  Cherokee buckets drop in? I could scavenge several interior parts plus  my fuse block is suffering from a long ago hydraulic clutch leak and so on.  I've blown 2 of the Dana 35's and this one sounds a little iffy recently. I guess I could salvage my engine into the Cherokee, but what good would that be !!!

I still need to lay eyes on the truck to assess the condition of all these items, I'm assuming it is in decent condition as the truck belongs to a friends son, I don't think he'd pawn off  his junk on me.

Any ideas will be appreciated....TIA , Rocketwheels

Cherokee 4-doors ... the front doors fit the Comanche, but a 2000 XJ will have the latches at a different height than your XJ and will require some modifications to the door posts. There are write-ups on this here on the forum.

Wheels are the same bolt pattern, but if the XJ is a Classic it should have 16" wheels. The Sport and base models still had 15" wheels.

Rear axle could be a Chrysler 8.25, or if the XJ has ABS the rear axle will be a Dana 35.

Seats and console require adaptation for use in an MJ but can be made to work.

AFAIK - the doors may fit if you relocate the striker/latch plate. I understand that is necessary on doors after the mid 90s. The Cherokee seats will not drop in but can be made to fit if you fabricate some brackets to adapt them to the Comanche seatbolt pattern. Console probably can be made to fit.

You don't say what transmission is in the Cherokee but I would guess it has an automatic. If it does, that complicates the drive train swap as you would need the transmission computer and wiring harness, trans cooler in the radiator and the associated lines. If you did swap drivetrains you would have to use both of the Cherokee axles and the rear axle would require work to relocate the spring brackets. Drive shafts would probably need to modified because of different wheelbases (I think).

Don't have clue on the fuse box issue as I've never paid any attention to where it's located or what it looks like on a 2000.

Someone will correct me if I'm wrong on the above.

Heck, it it's just a blown motor the XJ is a perfect source from a front clip update. The parts for that (two fenders, header, grille, lights, bumber, etc) would easily cost twice the asking price for the vehicle. The rest is just gravy.

Fuse panel setup is totally different. 2000 XJ has one fure panel in the passenger side footwell kick plate, and another on the passenger side under the hood. The entire wiring harness is different. None of it can be used in an MJ unless you plan to swap in the entire updated harness.

ALL the parts needed for a TOTAL 97 up conversion... for $300 bucks...

Just do it/buy it...make excuses later.

Even parting it out for $300 is great. To put this in perspective my 1997 donor was $500 with a running engine and wrecked in the rear. I thought that was a great deal.

00-01 will have the two piece cast iron exhaust manifold.

If the body is in good shape buy it and put a good junkyard motor in it and have yourself a nice vehicle for under a grand.

An engine swap is fairly simple to do.

Don't chop it up unless you have the skill and time to do it right or you'll be out two vehicles.

Look at all the 97-01 conversion write ups before you tackle it.
