Input Bearing

Recommended Posts

Trying to put a 1993 AX15 into a 1990 MJ, 4.0. Hit every parts store in town and could not find a bearing that would work. Got the bearing tool loaner from the parts house and went back to the JY where I got the AX15 from, was going to pull the old bearing and use it. NO luck. It was gone. Bit the bullet and went to the dealership. For $46.94 this is what I got.

Yes, I ordered two of them. When I went to try it for fit I found the ID was correct but the OD was a bit loose. Being a 50 mile round trip to the dealer and getting a little annoyed I decided to go with what had. Take a hose clamp,

Cut the screw off.

Perfect fit. Well, close anyway.

Got everything back together and discovered I had 5 speeds in reverse and one speed forward. Crawled underneath and checked. Sure enough I had the tranny in backwards. Trying to make up my mind now whether to reverse the tranny or to move the steering colum to the back of the cab facing to the rear and turn the seat around. Decisions, decisions. :???:

EDIT; Done. I'm getting to old for this chet. I can get down and under a Jeep real easy. It's getting back out from under it and back on my feet that's hard. I figure another 15-20 years I'm giving it up. Take up parachute testing or something.

Could you not just mount a much taller and wider rear view mirror..... :dunno: .....might save you some time (sometimes those seat bolts are finicky)

I have the flu and I'm somewhat delusional.........but WTF?

Of course you are right .....why didn't I think of it.....good catch.....Jim you will also have to change the lenses in your front and rear park and brake lights as by law the rear must be red and the orange in the front.

That is correct. Right up to '78 IIRC. As for the 5 speeds backwards, take the rear diff out and flip it upside down and put it back in. Plug the breather holes and drill a new one on "top" and you end up with a SOA as a bonus! WIN WIN!

When I was in my late teens I did that with my '66 Nova. Since it was 6 cyl and powerglide I had 2 reverse and one forwards that sounded like I had a supercharger. We laughed and drove it to town and back (speedo didn't work of course going forwards) I was awesome at reverse driving (we used to figure 8 race in reverse) and "re-enacted" the Hooper scene.
