New & Need Experienced Opinions.

Recommended Posts

hey everyone. new poster, long time (~6 month) occasional lurker.

looking for a comanche, doing the craigslist rounds as per usual, found this.

http://westernmass.craigslist.org/cto/4138628235.html

it sounds like a decent deal, especially because all the other ones around me are pristine and not to be modded/rodded.
a welded D44 and a D30 don't sound very street/tire friendly. smoked rear pinion bearings and a rotted chunk of frame worry me.

my question is this worth $1200 with a "bad" frame and junk pinion bearings?

thanks.

Yeah looks like a great $500 MJ, for $1200......na not so much

I was going to be generous and call it a $300 truck. In reality, it's a refugee from a scrap yard. The guy had to have been on some REALLY potent dope to post that at $1200 firm.

You guys can't be serious.  $300, come on Eagle i know your joking right? You did see what my friend bought for $1400 just a few days ago right? http://comancheclub.com/topic/40578-opinions-wanted/page-2 THAT truck was worth 300-500, but this truck http://westernmass.craigslist.org/cto/4138628235.html . This truck is definately worth at least a grand. Now, granted this is only if it has a 4.0, runs, drives, and shifts well.

96 thou original miles

AX-15 trans = good

231 t-case = good

Factory roll bar

4x4

"Chief" package

Custom front bumper, most likely custom rear too

Custom snorkel, so what if its made out of PVC.

Already lifted, at least some

Dana 44 rear, so what if it is welded, buy new gears who wants 3.07 anyway.

All the bad can/could be fixed in a single afternoon for less than 400-500 bucks depending on where you buy and what you might already have on hand.

I think you guys are dogging this truck waaaay to hard. Not saying its a peach, but I would not hesitate a moment to go take a look at it. I think a more reasonable price would be between $900 and $1000.

Depending on how the spiders have been welded, he most likely will need a new carrier as well. Also, regearing one axle alone will cost $400 to $500.

But if the frame "needs patched" it is rotted. This is a salvage truck only worth some money as a parts vehicle.

I can't be serious? No, I think YOU can't be serious. All this can be fixed in one afternoon?

  • Needs front drive shaft
  • headlights
  • rear pinion bearing
  • rear taillight
  • rear shocks
  • front stablizer
  • rocker panel patch
  • driver side floor pan
  • rear frame patch
  • Welded rear
  • 3.07 gears with huge tires.

No way anybody is going to repair all that in one afternoon. And if the seller is willing to admit to all that being bad, you can bet there's a lot of other little (or not so little) things wrong that he's not admitting to. This is not a "truck" -- it's a basket case.

Remember that list is what the guy is claiming to need repaired. What is unlisted? How is that AX15 and clutch after the abuse they would taken with those tires on 3.07 gears? Granted the ad implies that it does not come with the tires pictured as it says it will have "rollers" which are just four tires that hold air long enough to move the thing around. But the damage is probably already done to those components and maybe the engine bearings/pistons from lugging.  Nowhere does it say it is a factory MJ D44, either. It is possible considering the factory options but the MJ D44 is over-priced, anyway, IMHO. You could get a 4.10 8.8 with rear discs for less than the D44 re-gear alone would cost and who would spend a dime to re-gear to 3.07's?? Re-gear of the front would be required to match the rear but a re-gear is required to make any decent use of the truck with tires of the size pictured. Considering the frame that truck is toast and is not worth what it would take to fix it. $500 tops but whatever a scrap vehicle goes for in your area might be more realistic.

This is a $1000 4x4 MJ with a factory limited-slip D44, 4.0, and AW4. Granted it is unlifted but sometimes doing it yourself to know what you have is worth it:

After $500 worth of lift parts and 32" tires/rims I already had to replace the 31's that came on it:

Heck no. Once I saw the rear frame patch..move on. Plus its lifted and offroaded...just assume its been beat to crap and his looking to offload it to make it someone elses problem

MY truck needs a frame patch, but it is anything but rotted. There was a about a 1ft section on the bottom of the frame channel, right under the cab, with some rust holes clean through, which i cut out. I have yet to weld a patch in, but have continued to drive and wheel the truck many months after the surgery.

While i don't agree that it is a salvage truck, i do recognize that possibility that there might be more damage than i initialy considered. BUT for all you know it could be perfectly fine, none of us will ever know unless we were to actually go and see/drive it. This also applies to me as well.

Ok, maybe i spoke a little to soon. But the things like headlights, rear tail, shocks, steering stabilzer should all be doable in a day.

The other stuff like floor boards, frame patch, rockers, ya maybe not, but then again how many Comanches have you seen that didnt need floor board repair and who cares what the rockers look like any way.

As far as the front drive shaft goes, unless he is saying it needs a custom front drive, its a simple matter of bolting one in. Yes i know it can be difficult, but its not freakin brain surgery.

All this yay yaying back and forth is kinda pointless anyway, its not like any of us will ever get to go see the truck for ourselves.   ;)

That is a damn fine truck for that price, and its like you guys already know. Price is all relative. The above truck in my area would probably be going to 3k or more.

Nope. Not as long as the seller is going to hold out for a ridiculous price. It won't be better than described if you go look at it ... the BEST you can hope for is that it won't be too much worse.
