Diesel Engine

Recommended Posts

As you all know, I've been on a search for a diesel engine for awhile. Just talked to a fella says he's got a 4.? V6 diesel came out of a '85 Pontiac 6000. Didn't know Pontiacs had diesels in them back then. Swears it runs good. Just pulled because car got wrecked. So obviously I know nothing about the characteristics of this engine. The good part. He'll' give it to me to me if I go get it. The bad part. It's a 150 mile drive one way. Anybody with any experience or knowledge of these engines got anything to say about them to influence my decision whether  to go after it or not? JIm :dunno:

Not a bad engine by any means since the unreliability issues when it was released was mainly due to poor diesel being sold that contained water. Hard to find since it was only offered for a few years. Strong block, 85hp, 165 torque.

Main issue I see though is that it was used in transverse FWD vehicles.

You'd be looking at the Olds 4.3L LT7 diesel V6. 85bhp, 165lb-ft. I have no personal experience with them, but like all Olds diesels, they're not exactly known for their reliability. Whether or not they deserve that reputation though depends on who you talk to. The V6 is supposedly much better than the V8's.

If I recall right the car is FWD. But it was the "peak" of inovation for the Olds/GM diesel. don't think aluminun heads made it into production cars.

if the price is cheap enough, I say go for it.

I was interested in thisvengine for a long time.

I agree with grabbing it because it is free... but I'd be leery of investing a great deal of effort in a swap without knowing more particulars about that engine.

.

Note that I have no personal experience with that engine,  but it has a less-than stellar reputation from what I have read.  Back in the day, I did rebuild a few hundred fuel pumps for the V-6 and V-8, which were rotary and not adjustable for fuel delivery per cylinder and thus used more fuel (unlike the in-line Bosch pumps for other engines, which were great, though complicated). Those diesels had the reputation of being heavy, underpowered, and unreliable.

.

Almost all failures  at the local dealer were due to poor fuel filters, which did not separate all water from the fuel.   Adding a water trap would have been a good modification, as it is for any diesel I think: all it takes to ruin a fuel pump is one drop of water inside overnight to seize it. Plunger tolerances are a go/no-go fit requiring polishing on a lapidary wheel with rouge if tight - I was  trained that it was down to millionths of an inch and not measurable with shop micrometers.

Pass on the Renault. You can find them all over the RV section in Winnebago Le Sharos with a broken bellhousing where the starter USED to sit. Major weak point. I'd take a 4.3 over it and run a 200R4 BOP trans with either 2wd or divorced tcase.

There are a few shops that sell motor/trans combos from Japan and elsewhere posted on CL and evilbay. Latest one I was checking out (for a full size Jeep) is an Isuzu 4BD1T but only IF the bell pattern fit the later Aisan Warner trans. As in AW4's big brother. The Jatco trans is okay, but has no O/D or 4x4 available AFAIK (although Datsun used them). The later motors are known for tossing rods (not a good design)

I have been working on my 2.1 turbo diesel enging now for a few months and have learned a lot about it. I have two engines and will be getting another. I have also found new parts out of China like heads/ blocks etc. You should consider a MB 5 cylinder turbo diesel and I know where someone has one for sale from an abandoned jeep project. There is also a jeep 2.1 engine trans and xfer case in Tuajana on craigs list now for $1500.00. Any Renault is likely to need work unless you can hee it run and drive it.

What kind of budjet do you have for your diesel project?

I know this is an unrealistic option right now, but I just went to school on the new VM 3.0 V6 that is going into the Grand Cherokee, the Ram 1500, and Chrysler 300. It is a very compact stout little engine that looks like it would fit right into an MJ. It has 29 bolts holding the bottom end together! The turbo is at the rear of the intake manifold which might be an issue in an MJ. Hopefully the turbos in these won't be an issue, because the trans has to come out to replace the turbo. I could see if it was set a little forward with the mounts and trans it wouldnt be an issue. I think the 8 speed trans is a little long anyways so this would make up for that. Just my 2 cents!

I read a little about that engine, just enough to salivate...

.

The horsepower is really attractive, though overkill at something like 240 HP. The torque is downright scary though - over 500 lb-feet, right? Enough to twist a little Comanche into a pretzel!

No torque is only 420 lb/ft.

Another Diesel that might be worth a look is the 1984-86 BMW 524TD also found in 1985 Lincolns.  Can sometimes be found cheap.  Come with 4 speed auto trans.  Good thing about this engine is it was updated over the years in Europe for much more power and larger displacement.  Search on Ebay.uk   This BMW is also under 500 lbs if I remember correctly.

Several years ago I was very interested in the 524TD as a very interesting BMW
