a1awind
ok so a buddy of mine "hard rolled" his cherokee ...so the body is destroyed to the point its useless.....it still starts and runs fine. he offered to sell me it as a donor. its a H.O (i figured that if its no less work to install a renix 4.0 i might as well do the H.O) apart from the stuff i can get off the donor... what am i gonna need? i know fuel pump...(or will the cherokee one work?) and some exhaust work. how long should this take a couple competent mechanics to do this assuming we don't hit any snags (yeeaahh....that will happen) can it be done in a weekend? onlyinajeep726
Weekend? If you work from 6 AM to midnight, Friday - Sunday, maybe but I doubt it. You've got to swap the dash/dash harness and everything under the hood. Also, the rear drive shaft will need to be shortened. A special harness will have to made to mate the HO dash harness to the MJ fuel sender and tail lights. You'll also have to swap the fuel pump and possibly modify the sending unit. Also, the Renix sending unit will read backwards on an HO system. It'll be quite the task, but it can be done, but hard pressed in a weekend... Good luck! 87manche1
Ho started in 91 they didn't change till 97 so it won't be too bad. But I'm assuming itspre 97 as u didn't specify the donor yr

a1awind
right.....i didnt know i would be doing the entire truck vs just the under dash harness with a renix 4.0. perhaps i would be further ahead stress wise, by just putting a volvo turbo with a 6lb blowoff on my 2.5? i have a buddy that owns a junkyard, may have a volvo or two. should put me at 178hp by my calculation (10hp per lb of boost) anybody on here done that to a renix engine? I really hate this....i find a super clean comanche and its a freakin 4cyl (i really don't care about 4wd never been much of an off roader but i do plan on converting it eventually)
onlyinajeep726
i find a super clean comanche and its a freakin 4cyl Six months ago and I could totally relate, but now... lol. There's always a way of doing something. I've gotten mine swapped over to a 4.0 in about 3 months. It's possible if you put your mind and time into it. cruiser54
I'm confused. Wanna put a 94 HO into a Renix Jeep? Easy. Here's how. Cruiser’s HO into Renix Swap This swap is easier than some will lead you to believe, generally those who have never done it. Those of us who have done it, like myself, will share with you the things that need to be done for a successful swap. Just think of it as swapping in a long block. The HO and Renix have some differences but none that can’t be overcome very easily. Any HO engine from an XJ or ZJ through 1999 can be used. One running change was that the rear of the head was no longer drilled and tapped for the temperature gauge sender beginning in the 96 model year. The sender can be relocated to the threaded hole in the thermostat housing taken from the HO engine. You’ll have to extend the wire to that location. Some brave souls even drill and tap the HO head for the sender. You will be using the intake and exhaust manifolds from your Renix, along with all your sensors and wiring. Since the intake ports of the HO are slightly different, you use the Renix gasket. Exhaust ports are identical. You will need to use your Renix distributor as it is different than the HO because they use different fuel management systems. The flywheel or flexplate from the Renix must be used so your CPS gets the correct signals. The valve cover from the Renix allows you to keep your CCV system intact and requires no modifications. The HO block will have a plug in the coolant galley on the driver’s side of the block, closest to the front, which needs to be removed so your Coolant Temp Sensor can be installed in it’s place just as it is on the Renix. It requires a 5/16” square drive or a modified 3/8” drive that has been ground down to fit. Do this before installing the engine. As for the knock sensor, which is located just above the oil pan on the driver’s side of the engine about mid way, all the blocks I’ve seen are threaded for it. If not, I’ve heard they may be drilled but not tapped. Tap the hole if that’s the case. Revised 03/28/
onlyinajeep726
I'm confused. Wanna put a 94 HO into a Renix Jeep? I think the OP wants to swap everything over from his donor XJ to replace his 4-banger. Renix 4.0 harness he has not. This is my speculation based on his signature. a1awind
Ok...to quash the confusion here... I have an 87 2wd 2.5 4cyl. I want more power and eventually 4wd. I love the 4.0 and have owned many a jeep with it....except a comanche! (The 4.0 powered ones that pop up for sale on craigslist around here are usually not in very good shape at all or are modded to hell and back...and not in a nice kinda way.) So I bought this 4 cyl one because its so clean and I figured an angine swap would be a cake walk.....oops!. I have a tiny little garage with not enough room to swap an engine if it takes more than a sunny weekend.
Eagle
I know one guy from NAXJA-NAC who did a Renix 2.5L to Renix 4.0L swap in one weekend. But he already had all the donor stuff stripped out of the donor vehicle, prepped and ready to go -- and he worked the ENTIRE weekend, Friday evening through late Sunday night with no sleep to get it on the road for Monday morning. Realistically, it can't be done in a weekend.
a1awind
Well as clean as it is ...I don't plan on driving her in the winter...so I guess I can get a renix donor and take the winter to do it..... but can you turbo a renix 2.5?

a1awind
Ok....so a buddy of mine suggested that I drop in a 4.0 ho...and instead of rewiring the whole truck, use a megasquirt stand alone computer to run the engine as a stand alone...possible,? gogmorgo
If you can get a decent map from Megasquirt (or someone else), it's definitely possible, but if you don't get a map, then it's a lot of work creating one... and it usually requires a dyno or a lot of skillful guessing. Unless you've got some major performance upgrades planned, though, like forced induction, it may not be worth it. But definitely worth researching. Try to find someone (probably on a forum) running one on an XJ with an HO.
