Keyav8r
Tried a search but got little result. The manual calls for 75-90 gear oil for my 88 2wd BA10 transmission. What are you using and, if different from the manual recommendation, why? I'll be selling the MJ later but I don't want to put the wrong stuff in the tranny for the next owner. Eagle
I've run what the factory calls for in my '88 XJ since it was new. 287,000 miles and still going strong ...
Keyav8r
Thanks. That's what I'll go with.
Oddmodman
I might be wrong since I've only done the research for tranny lube for my ax15, but if they're the same, with the brass and bronze innards, it NEEDS TO BE GL-3. GL-5 will slowly ruin it otherwise, if you use it. Please, if I'm imparting the wrong info, someone correct me. Also, for anyone interested, MOPAR has changed the recommended tranny lube from 75w90 gl-3 to synthetic 10w30 engine oil. I do not know if they recommend a certain brand or not. I plan on using Walmart's Super Tech synthetic brand myself on this transmission I'm working on.

The question is about the BA 10/

Sweet cause I was just going to look into running a different lube in mine before installed the ax-15 so will get to walmart for same stuff. Thanks. velco
I'm running Amsoil 75w90 in both my BA10/5s...nice and smooth and shifts well in the cold of winter.
87MJTIM
I am no authority, but I have been told by an "authority" to use Penzoil SyncroMesh for my BA10. (That authority was the transmission shop that serviced my trans.)
Oddmodman
Eagle you are correct. I only mentioned the ax15 and what lube ISN'T supposed to go in it, because chances are high that it's the same case with the ba10, in that it probably has soft yellow-metal synchros etc that aren't supposed to have GL-5 used on them. Geonovast
I thought the BA 10/5 had aluminum sychros?
Oddmodman
I don't know what kind of synchros it has. I was just cautioning him not to pour GL-5 in it without checking first.

If they were the same, Jeep would have changed the recommendation for the BA 10/5 when they changed the recommendation for the AX-15. But ... they didn't. And it's also highly likely that my BA 10/5 would not have gone 287,000 miles if the gear lube was dining on the synchros. I have a call in to the parts guys at my dealership. If they can dredge up a current recommendation, they'll call me back and I'll post it.
Oddmodman
I honestly know nothing about the ba10. I certainly didn't mean to start an argument. All I was saying was check if it WAS specific, as in the case of my ax15, because I would have ruined my tranny by using the correct weight but accidentally the wrong grade. I might be wrong since I've only done the research for tranny lube for my ax15, but if they're the same, with the brass and bronze innards, it NEEDS TO BE GL-3. I plan on using Walmart's Super Tech synthetic brand myself on this transmission I'm working on. Perhaps I should have been more specific when I brought up the ax15. I mentioned my case as a warning, not a statement that your tranny will fall apart if you buy GL-5. Just a cautionary tale. Also, my quote about MOPAR changing their recommended oil to synthetic 10w30 was in reference to the ax-15 specifically. When I said I'd only done the research for my ax15, I though it was implied that's the only tranny I was referring to. Apologies if it seemed like I was talking about the ba10. I included that tidbit about MOPAR and the ax15 because the title of the post didn't specify which transmission was going to be the topic of the post, and I supposed that people would click on it looking for the correct lube for their ax15 as well. Eagle
Factory spec for the BA10/5 is SAE 75W90, GL-5.
