'87 Comance Rear End Replaced - Does This Look Right To You?

Recommended Posts

Get a measurement on both sides of spring perch to backing plate.

Looks like your axle is off center.

What's the new axle from?  Did you put the perches on it?

Sorry, I have no idea what a perch is or what I am supposed to measure. Do you mean where did he get the rear end he put in?  Have no idea.  Should I try to get the old one back and have it rebuilt?  That's what i wanted and he insited on putting a new (used) one in.

Doesn't it look a little beat up - the old one looks better to me.

I think we need a little more background, as I appear I was incorrect in assuming this was your truck.

The brakes may very well be locking up if the new axle sat awhile or is misadjusted.

It is my truck!

Doesn't feel like it's locking up, it just drags, if that makes any sense.

I think you both are saying the same thing and mean that they're partially engaging. Which would make them 'drag'. My guess is your load sensing valve is not properly adjusted.

Thanks. I am taking it back to them tomorrow.  Does the appearance concern you?  It looks all beat to hell.

Will it hurt to drive it like this?

The load (height) sensing valve will not affect the brakes dragging. But the adjustment of the star wheel inside the drums will. And if the parking brake cable is rusted and can't release completely, that will also cause the brakes to drag.

Load sensing valve can't cause drag. Jack it up by the pumpkin and try to rotate the wheels. They should turn freely with just a little drag on the brake shoes. The e-brake could be rusted nearly shut also. You can't tell anything by looking at it.

It's a Dana 35 rear axle. You have a 1988 MJ. The last MJ was built in 1992 and it's now 2013, so the newest any used MJ axle could possibly be is 21 years old. The axle came from a junkyard -- seriously, what were you expecting? It doesn't look beat to hell -- it looks like it was lying in a junkyard for quite awhile, the paint got scraped, and where there's no paint it has started to rust. Wire brush it, spray it down with brake cleaner, and go crazy with gloss black Rustoleum.

You had a shop do the install? The old axle is yours -- he should have given it to you, unless you specifically instructed him to throw it away.

Thanks everyone.  I went ahead and drove it tonight and a couple of times it rumbled, like when you hit those small speed bumps.  I don't  know, I'm taking it in and I'll see what happens.

And I knew the rear end would be old that's why I wanted mine rebuilt.  Hopefully he still has my old one and I can get it tomorrow.

.??. Well I'm sure it would cost you 5 times more money to have a shop rebuild your axle . If you are hearing noise take it back have them check it. Could be several things. Other than that.looks fine I don't see any issues in the picture.

Actually the quote I got from another mechanic to rebuild it was $400 less but the guy that replaced it had already torn it apart.

Went back today, the brake shoes needed adjusting and they fixed the emergency brake, it's better now, he said I need to drive if for a few hours.  Refused to give me the old rear end though said he had to return it to the place he got the new one because of a "core charge"?  Tried to tell me you always have to return the old part, never heard of that. He said if I wanted it I had to pay $250 for it.

Sounds like your replacement axle came from a rebuilder rather than a JY. In that case, yeah it would be rational to believe he had to turn in a core axle. Question I have is, what did you get with your replacement axle? Hopefully new outer axle bearings and seals, and carrier bearings/pinion bearings and seal. If it's just a JY axle with freshened up brakes, seems odd. I've never heard of the JY wanting the old one back, but I guess it's possible. Something doesn't quite add up...

But, at least you are back on track, problem solved!

Doesn't surprise me that theres a core charge, it's a rebuildable part. The JY's around me do cores on lots of parts like axles, A/C's, starters, alternators, engines, tranny's, etc.

In the case where the JY does a core charge, do they provide axles that are rebuilt? Or do they re-sell the core to a rebuilder?

What kind of rebuilding wouldn't clean up the outside and paint it?

Sounds like complete BS to me.  There's no way a rebuilder is short on D35s, and they're not worth rebuilding anyway.  You could easily score a D44 or 29 spline Chrysler 8.25 for less than $250.

I am accustomed to seeing core charges in parts stores for things that are commonly rebuilt and sold as such, like alternators and starters. Granted, I'm only 69 years old and I've only been playing gearhead since I was 14 (that's a mere 55 years), but I have never heard of a junkyard charging a core charge for something like a used axle.

And the axle in that photo does NOT look like a rebuilt axle. A rebuilt would have at least had a thin coat of cheap black paint on it.

I strongly suggest that you never go back to that shop for other work. He's a robber.

I just picked up a 8.8 for my mj and I was on the search for a 4.10 31 spline one for a while I called at least 20 junk yards and I would say about half of them wanted a old axle in exhage or to pay upwards of a 100 core. I know it's crazy but junk yards are doing it now.

Yeah, I think he's full of it. He told me that he had to put a new seal on it and then he tried to tell me there wasn't any rust on it?!?!?

and not to pick nits, but from that pic of the "new" axle, it doesn't look like your guy used new U-bolts on the leafpacks.  I would strongly suggest you either ask him to replace with new, or do it yourself and eat the small cost involved.  Reusing the old ones is bad ju ju....
