Larger Fuel Tank

Recommended Posts

the only reason the tanks should differ in size is the lwb came with a 23.5 gal tank and the swb came with an 18 gal tank. they are not a direct swap for one another, but as with most things with enough modification most anything is possible.

The SWB also offered a 13.5 gallon tank.....so swapping that out for the 18.5 gallon tank should be possible.

No, the LWB also offered a small tank. The external dimensions are the same as the 23.5 gallon tank, it just has baffles inside to reduce the capacity. They did the same thing with the early Cherokees. I believe it had something to do with minimizing curb weight to maximize fuel efficiency on the government mileage tests.

The SWB only had one size, as far as I know.

Ok it looked like the mounting straps were in the same location so I think just to be safe then I'll grab the tank, straps, hoses, and sending unit. Better to get it all while I'm there anyway right

Plus those sending units are a huge pain to find when you need one. Even if you don't use it, it'd be good to have a spare.

My best guess is that since the filler neck goes into the side of the tank, the 23.5 line is below it. The time I did it, I'd just driven about 110 miles with my low fuel light on. So I was feeling pretty weirded out as it was. Then the manager at the full serve saw me squinting strangely at the receipt so I told him my tank wasn't that big. We went back and reviewed the security tape, and the attendant hadn't done anything out of the ordinary. But I've pumped my own gas ever since.

The P.O had a new tank installed in Oscar before i bought the truck, and its only a 13.5 gallon tank, looks the same as the 18.5 in my other trucks though from the outside, this was also the tank with the XJ sending unit installed somehow....weird, lol

How did you deduce it has a 13.5 gallon capacity?
