420manche
Hi all newbie question here. I was in the boneyard looking for the rear speaker brackets and I came across an 88 manche with 4.0l that had a larger gas tank than my 2.5l 87. What to I need to get with the tank for the swap.... Tank, straps, sending unit?
relyt120
the only reason the tanks should differ in size is the lwb came with a 23.5 gal tank and the swb came with an 18 gal tank. they are not a direct swap for one another, but as with most things with enough modification most anything is possible. ComancheKid45
The SWB also offered a 13.5 gallon tank.....so swapping that out for the 18.5 gallon tank should be possible.
420manche
Ok it looked like the mounting straps were in the same location so I think just to be safe then I'll grab the tank, straps, hoses, and sending unit. Better to get it all while I'm there anyway right

mvusse
Never heard of that. But the lwb did have a 16 gallon tank available. Never seen one yet, though. All the ones I have seen were the 23.5 gallon one.

No, the LWB also offered a small tank. The external dimensions are the same as the 23.5 gallon tank, it just has baffles inside to reduce the capacity. They did the same thing with the early Cherokees. I believe it had something to do with minimizing curb weight to maximize fuel efficiency on the government mileage tests. The SWB only had one size, as far as I know.

gogmorgo
Imperial gallons are bigger. 23.5 is something like 19 imperial.

mvusse
I once put 26 gallons into my 23.5 gallon tank... :???: I did too. Even contacted the county auditor to check the gas pump.
gogmorgo
My best guess is that since the filler neck goes into the side of the tank, the 23.5 line is below it. The time I did it, I'd just driven about 110 miles with my low fuel light on. So I was feeling pretty weirded out as it was. Then the manager at the full serve saw me squinting strangely at the receipt so I told him my tank wasn't that big. We went back and reviewed the security tape, and the attendant hadn't done anything out of the ordinary. But I've pumped my own gas ever since. The P.O had a new tank installed in Oscar before i bought the truck, and its only a 13.5 gallon tank, looks the same as the 18.5 in my other trucks though from the outside, this was also the tank with the XJ sending unit installed somehow....weird, lol

You're not gonna fit 2.5 gallons into that short little filler hose. Just sayin
gogmorgo
No, but there's a big space in the tank between the bottom of where the filler neck connects to the side of the tank and the top of the tank. I meant the 23.5 gal line could be below where it hooks up. Like this:
