chappy88
I have the AX-5 2wd on the jack ready to be removed , removed 4 lower bolts, but not sure about 2 torx head bolts at top of housing, do they need to come out? How many total?
BIGHEEP
(2) E12 torx. Yes they need to come out.
Geonovast
Whoa Whoa. You said AX-5. That's a 2.5/2.8 trans. What motor do you have? Only the 4.0 has the torx bolts. The 2.5 will have an 18mm just like all the other trans bolts. Also, the 2.5 has 6 bolts that go through the housing into the block. 4.0 only has 4. chappy88
Ya i have 4.0 5speed , and was going by info I got from manual? What is the true code? / Manual doesnt specify between engines?
Pete M
the trans you have is a Peugeot BA-10/5. a tip: replace the top two bolts with studs/nuts. you'll never have to worry about the silly reverses torx bolts again and the studs will help with alignment when you re-install the trans.

He could very well have an AX-15. I'd still go with his advice though, chappy. Replace those bolts and do some sort of ritual sacrifice with them. If you take them to a scrap yard, ask if you can watch them burn.
chappy88
Mj's an 88 2wd 4.0lt, I've had it since new! My son and I are converting to 4wd, I hear you on the Torx. I had other probs and had to make the tool to drain the oil to the tranny...standard 1/4 or 3/8 drive would not fit the drain plug...now the torx. Half the truck is standard and 1/2 is metric  Darn AMC anyway! So now that you know its an 1988, what tranny do I have? and thanks for the stud idea! Pete M
87-89.5 came with the peugeot, after that they got the AX-15. always a chance someone upgraded a broken peugeot with an AX-15, so it's always good to confirm. He didn't specify year, Pete. He could very well have an AX-15. just going on his screen name. :D
chappy88
everythings original , so we know what it is...thanks. I have a 91 Cherekee 4.0lt 5 speed as my donor, My plans are to take front end tranny and transfer case and put it in the mj, Is there a chance I will be able to use exsisting rear end? Its in better shape than the Donor! Any other tips?
Geonovast
Yes, you can use your existing rear end. You'll need to use the 91's transmission crossmember, as the AX-15's has a dip in the middle. Everything should be pretty much bolt in. You'll need to pull up the carpet a bit to install the body side t-case linkage bracket. There are dimples for the holes you need to drill, so you don't even need to measure anything for that. Make sure you check the size of the tip of the transmission input shaft before you go sticking the AX-15 in. The change was in 92, but plenty of the switches on these trucks overlap years unofficially. Being a 91, it should be the same size as your 88's, but make sure. Worst part about your conversion is needing to have your 2wd driveshaft cut down to the proper length. Make sure you use the 4wd yoke off the XJ's driveshaft. The hole for the 4wd shift lever is already there, with a plate bolted over it. The damn things were designed to be converted to 4wd.
chappy88
I know isnt it great! Only regret is I was cheap in 88 (and didnt have the casH) to go 4wd. Already took up the carpet, and concicidering the yrear and amount of salt its seen , not to bad! guess al that underoiling did the trick  Oh well, my kid and I are having some fun! I'm sure we will chat again
gogmorgo
The damn things were designed to be converted to 4wd. I know how engineers think. More likely, they were designed to be 4wd, then as an afterthought someone decided they didn't have to be, and the 2wd was hastily deleted onto the chassis at the last minute. They are Jeeps, after all.
chappy88
Great info guys, so what about the indicating wiring for the 4wd, is it there as well? Likely not necessary but might be nice. Also my mj has the large fuel guage where the tach should be. The donor xj has a tach, would the whole guage panel transfer into the Mj?
jimoshel
Yes
Geonovast
No, it wouldn't. Your MJ is a Renix system being an 88, and the 91 is a HO(Chrysler). The electronics are completely different. Nothing between the clusters will swap. If you find a full cluster from another Renix, you can swap that one in.
Walkenvol
Yes, you can use your existing rear end. Are the '91 xj and the ''88 mj always the same diff gear ratio with the manual trannys?
cruiser54
Are the '91 xj and the ''88 mj always the same diff gear ratio with the manual trannys? For the most part. There's a little tag on them to help you figure it out.

Geonovast
Are the '91 xj and the ''88 mj always the same diff gear ratio with the manual trannys? When it comes the 4.0, they should be. They should both be 3.07, but it's always a good idea to double check. The 2.5s had different axle ratios depending on if you had a 4 or a 5 speed. chappy88
. Tranny out and thanks (male torx bolts?) ...it is a Peugeot BA-10/5, bad reveiws on this one not sure why, this ones been great for me ! Are they worth anything? I'll look for an 88 guage cluster with a tach, should'nt be that hard to find.
