skidoo_j
He gave you the link to the correct forum. It's been discussed several times. The most direct options are 96+ or one from a wj 01 ish area. Start reading the link above. with an 88 either way is going to be about the same. mods will be needed, but nothing major. airspeed
96 Booster and Master Cylinder was the best upgrade I ever did to this vehicle. Modify the pushrod, use the 1/4" spacer on the firewall and form your brake lines. You will have to move the windshield washer tank.
ratrapp
i agree,i did the 96 booster/master cylinder upgrade and it was one of the best things i've ever done to the mj.it's well worth it in my opinion.
johnnyc
I did the WJ swap. It was pretty much a bolt-on in my 92 MJ. Didn't have to modify anything. Just had to make the brake lines. I know the 96-01 XJs had the dual diaphragm booster. But I know people who have put the WJ booster and master in their late model XJs and they say it is an improvement over the late model XJ setup. So for the same amount of work, I say go with the WJ setup

maddzz1
The rod on the 97 thru 01 XJ is longer than it is on the 96XJ. I bought what I thought were 2 96 boosters (one for me and one for someone else). Turned out one was a 96 and one was 97 thru 01. When I saw the rods were different lengths I checked the numbers and the one with the longer rod was a 97+
ftpiercecracker1
Wow, thats pretty cool. I know the guy in the video, i bought a motor from him a few months ago. Nice guy, very quite spoken, has got a pretty BA cherokee rock crawler.
Exgrayxj
I was told by someone that I consider to pretty sharp on this stuff, that the TJ booster (and presumeably the master with it) is virtually a bolt on. The only TJ booster I have seen does have the funny shaped, droopy pushrod and flat ground area for the switch. I also am guessing that the TJ master probably uses bubble flares, so lines will still have to be made. At least around here, XJs ZJs and even WJs outnumber the TJs in the u pull it. I have yet to see a TJ there, in any of the ones I go to. Even MJs as few and far apart as they are, are more common than a TJ in local yards. So, it will be most likely another XJ conversion for me when it comes the MJs turn. But, on the xj, it has been an amazing improvement in braking, with a 97 up xj booster master. Having brakes that work is a good thing.
cruiser54
Go WJ. As easy, if not easier, than the 95 to 96 XJ swap. Be sure to keep the FLEXIBLE lines that exit the master cylinder.
