Dear Facebook, I Hate You...

Believe it or not, but Facebook does have uses for some of us older non conformists.

I was able to reconnect with a few people I haven't heard from in years.

My community has a "on line yard sale", most items are sold very quickly.

Our tribe has a public page (not sanctioned by the tribe) that posts events, rumors and general items of interest.

So yeah, FB does have uses for older people like me, besides having a FB account allows me to see what my children

and family are up to, keeps us connected.

Yup, use imgur, even has a phone app.

Or do like me, and get your own website:

www.colorado4wheel.com

www.colorado4wheel.com/images

well, i have my own home based internet server. currently Apache2 is setup to redirect to my build page. I am just no good with web dev, but i am starting to think i should look into it. for my photos if nothing else.

do you run a home based server or rent one from a provider?

Both, I have an apache setup here that I just don't use, I have found that its just easier to pay someone $9 a month for unlimited storage and unlimited bandwidth hosting. Better than my home connection getting the brunt, plus I don't have to fuss around with my dynamic IP here at the house.

Well darn... It worked a little while ago... Guess I need I work out some bugs

It looks like you need to install a folder, you need a ".htaccess" file that allows users to see the directory contents.

Or consider setting up a database based program to organize them(I think a drupal setup could work). You can also just post the image directly and we can see it, but right now we can't view the directory.

basically you need to make a text file that filename starts with a period "." so that is hidden. call it ".htaccess" then inside you need the line "Options +Indexes " this turns it on, default is off. This will make any subdirectories also hidden or viewable, so propagates from the parent.

well i got it working again...

currently to make it work permissions are set to 777 on my linux server for the www directory.

i just made that file you told me about, and going to change the permissions for the directory so something lower like 775

---------------

it seems to still be working

I just did a speed test at my business, 20Mbps down / 5Mbps up

I might move my server there for the better band width.

That would be good, there are some security issues to keep in mind, but consider setting up a remote access, ie remote desktop, so that you can access the computer and make changes easily. Installing some database software is a good idea if you want to use something like drupal to organize content. But for simple picture hosting just having the directory viewable is nice.

I have been using lightroom to generate a gallery for a group of photos(like an event that won't change in the number of photos) but I am considering a solution that will automatically generate a gallery for things where I keep adding photos, such as the MJ build.
