Hey ya'll. I just thought I'd drop on in here to introduce myself, huck731 (scott) from the portage area in wisconsin. just bought my 91 comanche SporTruck saturday. I have long been a fna of these trucks because they are fairly unique to the brand as basically the only pickup jeep has made in a long time. I come to the jeep community for the euro car scene (I also own a 71 super beetle and have always owned a vw since I was 17.). see ya'll on the forums.

Hi Huck! I think you're about the closest member to me, I live in Decorah Iowa

funny because the town I actually live in is dekorra, wi

Mmm... what is it that makes such a good combination of Jeeps and VWs? There's a few of us around here that dabble in the two breeds. Welcome!

well a big vw company ( hpa motorsports) did a vw tdi powered wrangler abotu 2 years ago.

Welcome! There are a few yards around Madison that have MJ's, how often do you find yourself south of Mad-town? Portage isn't far...

well now that I have a decent vehicle I can get there more often. I actually live about 2 miles from a yard that has a decent amount of jeeps from what I'm told.

Convinced me. Headed for the P&P. See what they got in VW diesels. Been looking for a Mercedes diesel for the last couple months but they're kinda scarce around here. Got a '89 MJ could use a new engine.

I wanted a mercedes diesel too, but their rarity turned me away. 318 swap seems better for now...hopefully a mercedes comes my way...or a 4bt and the money to make it fit!

Now the vw 1.9 seems worth looking into...wonder what the swap would take in an mj....

Having a hard time believing a 1.9 engine can actually power a Jeep and give any respectable performance. Waiting for a comment from Rob.

The VW's that this little 1.9L diesel is in weighs about the same (or more) than most MJs. I have a 2002 VW Golf TDI with the 1.9L motor in question and it has no problem pulling my 3,250 lb vehicle around...while pulling 46-48MPG on the highway and 42-44MPG around town.

This engine is on my short list of diesels I want to replace my aging 4.0L in my '92. Biggest issue is mating up a transmission. This is normally a transverse-mounted engine, but will need to be converted to longitudinal. As you can see by the article that was posted, it's going to require a hefty chunk of CNC'ed aluminum, which is going to cost some big bucks unless bought in large quantities.

honestly aside from the fact that alot of you guys (like most vw guys) are diyers who build everything thingselfves except for the parts going on, I'd just buy the stage 1 kit so you have the mounts. I have emailed hpa and recieved a response from the sales team stating that my question about an mj conversion kit was forewarder to the guy in charge of the project. heck, I'd even let them use my truck as a guinnea pig.
